Ponds

Just a update on what is going on with the ponds. As you can see I have lined two of the ponds and hoping I dont have to line the other two.
Just dug the trench to put the water and power lines in the ground and that took us 4 day, what a job! The county never fixed the bridge so we could get the tractor over to the place to get what we wanted done, done. Still have fencing to finish and that is a hold off because of bridge. I tried putting it up with the truck and a come along but did not get it tight enough, Jacks dad has a homemade contraption that works good streaching wire and works good with the tractor but not a truck.

Does anyone know of a plant that I can plant on the edges of the pond that will run down the sides of the liner so as to cover the liner showing. I want to use something that will help protect the liner from the sun and weather.

A+ for effort

so what kind of liner are you using? You shouldn't need to protect it from the sun. You will beat it up before the sun does..
very interesting set ups

Black plastic will bake almost anything that tries to grow on top of it. You have a Japanese theme going with the koi, so how about some good ol' Japanese Kudzu.

Hi Judy,

Aren't you gonna add mud later or you're just gonna leave it like that. What about some soft conifers, they very hardy plants

rgds,
Jon

PS: A bit disappointed it took you 4 days digging You could've sent a plane ticket and done in one day

Potato vine planted around the banks ought to work well for you. Once they get established they send off runners that will go straight down the banks and onto the top of the water. As soon as they get there they'll set roots and you won't even have to water them anymore
We had some planted along one side of our pond this past summer and it soon became the favorite hangout for our koi during the heat of the day. Shade and snacks all in one

Luke the liner is JPL 24 really tuff stuff. I could have got the 45 mil rubber liner for the same price and was told this was as good as that it is just lighter, it is made of a tarp material that is reinforced and is really strong. I dont see a problem with me beating it up because running a seine is so easy in a lined pond. I was able to catch all koi in one long sweep across the pond. It may be different this spring as I will be adding mud to the bottom of the ponds.

I dont like the black liner showing on the sides of the pond, I just want to do this to make it look better and to protect the liner from the sun. It is UV protected but still think it would be better to have something to cover the sides.

Larry I like the idea of the potato plants and should be safe for the koi if they eat the plants. Just wondering if the plants will cause me a problem since they take roots in the water when it comes time to pull the ponds. Also will these plants come back every year or will I have to replace.

Jon, why do you alway ask me to send you a plane ticket?

I believe potato plants are poisonous to humans--probably also to fish.

Last time we rented a ditch witch the operator did not know how to use it and it took longer trying to figure out how to use it than it dig to just dig the trench. Plus the trench looked like a snake.
I think we did better using a sharp shooter to do the job and cost a hole lot less Let all the pipes dry good and checked preformance today and all was great, cut off to each pond and can have water whenever needed. Added a drainage box and now I am ready for winter.
