Increasing Aeration during cold months??

Winter is coming ... a lot of rainning around the SF Bay Area since last couple days and weather is chilly as well....

Q is, shall we increase the aeration during cold months?

Also, used to live in Upstate NY and seem many ponds covered by ice/snow during winter time. Just wonder how you guys take care of your koi/pond when ice/snow covered your koi ponds? Pond heating; increasing aeration, or leave them as normal since koi are cold-blood animals anyway?

Dinh, you can reduce your aeration in your pond by 50% or more...oxygen levels in the pond tend to be at it's most when the temps are low...

the cooler the temps the more capable the H2o is of holding it's oxygen. So cutting back is ok...

for outside ponds it's best to keep a hole open in the ice for gas exchange by running a strong air column.

Dinh,

comparing to winter in upstate new york, winter in bay area is like living in hawaii.

Save the airpump and some electricity. Just Turn it off. They don't need is as much. 02 levels will be very high at lower temps..
