Where/When was first breakout of KHV

Folks, there are many threads about KHV and KHV rumors recently. Many people think KHV was first breakout in Japan and spread out. But I am not so sure about this. Just wonder where and when the first breakout of KHV was reported?

I think most reports has it starting in 1998 out of Isreal and hitting the US in the same year.

correction: according to this it was first detected in Germany a year earlier.

Seems to me people are scared of rumors...They like to sit in their lazyboys and continue to believe KHV is a virus the hobbyist mind created...Dinh and Dan you got to remember that if we as hobbyist get KHV it is our fault....It isn't the Japanese agent, the broker and the dealer's fault it is our fault....The Koi Hobby is like the Matrix, you can only believe to a certain point what is real and not real....

That's a little too deep for me.

I agree with the part of what you're saying. If a hobbyist gets a fish with KHV and the hobbyist allow it to spread to the rest of their fish then it's their fault. That first KHV fish though, I think there's blame to be shared by all - breeder, dealer, and hobbyist.

I am not sure it matters anymore where KHV started although most would now say Europe or Isreal. KHV is now found worldwide. KHV didn't just occur spontantously in cultivated carp/koi. KHV surely came from a wild population somewhere and would still be lurking there today. Being so temperture dependent it could lie dormant/undectected in cooler or warmer climates.

Much more research is needed and I can't thank Koi Bito, Brian and Dinh, enough for their assistance and support of the fund raising efforts at Project KHV. THis also goes for all those Koi Bito supporters out there that have made contributions as well. Watch for another koi art auction to be starting soon on the Koi Bito Auction site.

Dan,

Thanks much for sharing the info and your comments as well.

I don't think any breeders or dealers out there willingly to sell their koi knowing their koi have carried KHV virus. They may sell their koi with KHV virus without knowing that. And, of course, no koi hobbyist want to introduce koi with KHV to their ponds. Of course, we say that dealers/breeders/buyers need to QT before releasing any koi. But I can't find anywhere indicates that QT process will "GUARANTEE" 100% KHV-free. Let alone that many people can not go thru QT process correctly. Having say that, my point is that, we, as koi hobbyists, we should be part of the solution. I meant help to fight this deadly virus and should not blame anyone.

Many folks PM me and asking me that why not many breeders in Japan does not stand up for this effort to fight KHV since they are major dealers and where the first KHV breakout. During studying about KHV, I remember the first KHV breakout was not in Japan. So, it was just interesting to find out to make sure the correct infomration I got. However, it does not matter where it was first breakout. Other example, seems like the first breakout of Bird-Flu was in Asia area, and it does not mean that Asia countries should fight the virus, not the state etc...

Man, we love koi, and we need to spread out this deadly KH virus and need to be part of the solution to fight this virus. If we, koi folks, don't support this, who willing to do so.....

Regards,
--Dinh

Dinh, we had this conversation before in regards to who is responsible...The breeders have to take note and fight the battle at home...remember this is just a hobby for us and it is a living for the breeders...They have far much to lose than just losing our enjoyment...

Ray: It is pretty obvious that Keirin Koi bids high & often in support of KHV research. Carl has a few grand Omosako Shiro Utsuri listed. (Both are K-B advertisers.) Maybe you could talk him into allowing one to be auctioned for research? Might be overbid time.

Thanks Mike, this is one of the venue we should pursue.

We have many hard copies of KB & AKCA KHV Flyers including virus information and funding support. We brought hundred copies to KoiKichi show. Couple dealers in the SF Bay Area already helped to support in spreading out the info. Champion Nishikigoi and Eastern Nishikigoi already have hundred copies placed on their information desk for any customer or any koi hobbyist. Thanks to Champion Nishikigoi fand Esatern Nishikigoi for willing to help this.

If any dealer or club out there want to help out by placing the KHV Flyers on their site, please feel free to let us know. I will send out flyers upon request.

Best regards,
--Dinh
