I have used what you call a mud pond service in Japan. I have a few fish over there now. I pretty much pay the fee and don't think about the koi until fall. Its pretty much a gamble but again the payoffs are big. Its also a quick way to study how nishikigoi develop. I better stop here. I am starting to think about them..

Joe, I had to chuckle at your posting...I never understood what it was like till i had koi out in the mudponds. You can't get them out of your mind and it'll drive you cracy with anticipation...glad to see you've got "the fever"....

Judy,

If your in charge of the QT tank and all go thru the same treatment then you should have an equal footing on risk. Without writing a thesis paper, there are other things involved. for example it is best to introduce all the koi to one pond at the same time. I can't tell you scientifically why, just experience but adding fish weeks and months later seems to upset the apple cart somehow and the results are not up to expectation. My advice would be to have everyone sign a release so that legally your protected.

Dick, I think one of the coolest things that ever happend to me was when I Left a koi at Momotaro's in Sept. Then went back in April to Momotaro. I went to the pond where my koi was. Daisuke said its in here somewhere. I was laughing pointing down in front of me telling him its right here. It was a cool site to see my kohak right there.

I have others all around Japan maybe too many. LOL I guess I am a sucker knowing that a mudpond is way superior to what I can ever do with them. I think about the best for the koi. If keeping them there is best then I ain't I have no problem with that. Like I said what is best for the koi within reason. That being said I have no problem bringing one home to tinker with for the year..

I really want to raise koi and that work for me. I have fun just thinking about what my koi my produce. I dont really think I would want to start renting mud pond space to grow out peoples koi, but it would be something to fall back on since I have went in debt if I could not sell the koi I raise. Its alway good to know that you have another route you can take.

Judy,
I think it's great you have a dream and your pursueing it...i wish you the very best in your efforts. So many people have jobs but feel unfulfilled in what they're doing, yet lack the courage to step forward and follow their dreams.
I hope you'll be rewarded for your efforts if not atleast happy in what your doing!

Thanks Dick,

Im racking and scraping the bottom of the barrel getting started. It really does not bother me that I am having to use all my extra money as it is fun for me anyway and a lot of people spend lots of money on there hobby and never get any returns out of it. I do believe that one day I will see some money coming from this, and I am not going to try and get rich, I just want to make enough to keep the farm going and maybe grow a little bigger. Its so much fun just doing this sort of thing and happyness is really what life is all about. If I can give the koi lovers out there some of the same with my koi then I am all for it.
Just watching children when the see the big koi and the look on their faces and the fact that they want one it enough to keep me going. Im such a sucker when it comes to children, I have already given away so many little small koi to one child its not even funny, a bullfrog keeps getting the small koi so I replace it.

It's good to dream and I think some of us as Hobbyist would like the conivent access to growing a koi the Japanese way. Seasoning a koi from year to year has always been a dream of mine and finding a mud pond in my area would be the ideal thing....I think I past my knowledge of growing a koi in a concrete environment, I need to get my hands dirty with a mud pond so I can fully cycle a fish...anyways, still looking for a mud pond close to home.

Judy, you have 4 ponds we wish we all could have. I would rather have a mud pond than my puddle in backyard. I have a dream too. But problem is I have the seine net but nothing to seine.. LOL. I have been close to renting mud onds nearby but most of the mtn fold want to fish them as well

Judy, keep chasing your dream I think most of us envy your situation.

I can promise giving up is not in my vocabulary. I will need the members of this board to help me make a good go of this though. When it comes to culling I dont know a thing. Will have to grow out many of my first years koi and post pics and get the advice of you guys so I will know more about what to keep and what not to keep. I know a little but not enough to do this on my own. I just love koi, its that simple. With the knowlege of some of the member here I hope after the first kohaku spawn I will know what I need to know, then after I see how well my ponds work for me then maybe the next year I can spawn another type. If I can spawn kohaku and showa and sanke and raise good koi I will be happy. I think it will take three to four years just learning what I need to know about these three types.

I might even give away a kohaku of their pic out of my first spawn to members of this forum to show If they will just tell other where they got the koi. But I will first get some type of game going to see who wins the koi

You know I think three koi a year would be good. What do you guys think?
