Just wonder what the going rate is for renting mud pond space? If I dont make it raiseing and selling koi then I might consider renting space for others to grow out their koi.

We are available here in the Northwest. Morninglight Koi farm near Portland, Oregon. Many mud ponds but we don't mix koi from multiple sources...if you wish to rent one of our mudponds you have the whole mudpond. Costs are reasonable. Call me if you are interested...we also have greenhouse heated concrete ponds and greenhouse covered mudponds.

Thanks.

jUDY;

cOUPLA THOUGHTS ON YOUR POSTS:

I have kept koi in japan and new jersey (quality koi) for mud pond experience

from a personal standpoint I was amazed in a reflective moment how much the anticipation builds towards harvest. great stuff!

from a producer's standpoint, you might want to look hard for being responsible for someone else's koi.

In Japan the understanding is that while the breeder will take care of yours as well as his, $%^&*( happens and if it does...well it does.

here in America I have seen a different take on it and the mud pond owner
is held responsible for replacement of atleast something better. i know from first hand experience that there is the possibility of this turning into a big expensive nightmare so i caution you.

thought Chagoi's comment about no mixing was interesting because all of the situations I've run across it's been the producers own product that goes into his own ponds. But as the popularity of the experience grows and dealers wanting to provide the service for clients, new safe standards will have to be adapted. thoughts anyone/?

It's kinda hard considering that intstead of mixing your fish with others fish whom you dont know, as a hobbyist you really got to look into getting a pond with a bunch of friends who you know their fish are free of shiyt(KHV)....Anyways, I would love to get in to renting a pond and growing some fish out for spring...

Dick, I have a fish I'd love to have spend a season in a mudpond, but I do not know anyone I'd trust who would take her, and if someone would, that would raise a question of whether I could trust them! .... bio-security post-KHV changes things.

Thumbs up

Mike: Absolutely correct...have to trust your farmer or dealer and on the flip side do we trust the hobbyist or are we doing it for the money...risky business.
We only do this with folks we trust and before they go into our mudponds we will qt them in one of our segregated concrete heated ponds. No mixing of koi period.

Dick, I purchased two momo from Keirin Koi this past fall, they held them for me until spring. When I recieved the koi I took them both and put them in very large mud pond with other koi, I understood that he would take care of my koi like he did his own and when I went to pic up my koi to bring home they have several bad places on them. My frist thought was ulcers, come to find out it was from bad rough handling when they caught the koi. I was not mad but I found out the hard way you dont just let anyone take care of your koi as you might not like the way they take care of there own.

If I done this I would have to draw up a contract between the two parties so as not to run into lawsuits that would cost me out my butt. I think most people understand that anything can happen to koi in a mud pond and that is a chance you are taking when they are in natural enviroment. I would have to take that risk if I had the money to grow koi out that I wanted to grow big and did not have the space to provide them.

Ok when people buy a new koi they QT before putting them in their pond with the other koi right, so what is the difference if you QT koi and then place them in a mud pond with the other koi that have allready been through the QT process?
