where should i put my TT media while working on the TT?

i have to turn off my TT for a couple of days to fix a leak. my TT is 75 milk crates with Matala mat in them.

my days are cool here, mid 60's. i could put them in the shade and occasionally wet them down with the hose with water that is passed through a water softener with AC.

or i could put them all in the pond for the two days.

or i could put them back in service within a few hours or the next day before the polyurethane caulking is totally cured.

are the species of bacteria differnt in the highly aerobic TT compared to submerged? will i drown the bacteria if i put them all in the pond?

it has been working so well. this will be a good time to fix it though as the days here are cool but not too cold. pond temp is 62 today.

Carl

sinking sounds good if you can get a heavy flow of oxygenated water though them...
Another idea..
set up a water proof liner next to the pond that drains back into the pond, and get a small garden sprinkler attached to a small pump which draws water from the pond and that can "sprinkle" the media

Carl, sometimes keeping them in the air is just fine. If you sink them you need then they need to be well oxygenated. A couple of days aint that bad.

Some say the bacteria can literally die off in 5-6 hours. I think too long in the air is a bad thing. I would suggest using the pump and sprinkler system as suggested. This should work very well. I don't think your system will skip a beat when put back on line.

Thumbs up

I'm with Luke and Koiczar. Sprinkling would work well and be much easier to handle than submerging.

Hey Carl . . .

I'd use an 8' Pearls of Paradise tank (which I'd be happy to loan you) and a submersible pump. I'd stack the 75 milk crates in the tank, add 6" of pond water and cycle it over the crates. PM if you're interested, OK?

I have my Matala inside the tank (gravie flow) and pump the water out of the tank into the pond.

It works o.k. to me.

In past remodels I've just left the media out in the air for days, max about 6-7 days. No spikes when pond started back up. I would leave them out, not submerged, and not worry about it.

Ryan I have pretty much done the same thing with no spikes. Can't say that about my live rock in reef tank..
