I was watching the "Springtime in Niigata" video and watched Oomo select tategoi tosai. He was saying that one of the deciding factors in selecting fish was the sharpness of kiwa or the edging of pattern. Would be safe to say in deciding potential fish for you collection we should away from fish with a blurred kiwa?

I'm no expert on kiwa but I would guess it is safe to say that. You also need to know what type of kiwa you are looking at. Many articles say to look for a razor sharp line. If you've never seen maruzome kiwa you might get confused as it looks scalloped and not like a razor sharp line. Most people probably wouldn't make that mistake but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Kiwa is the leading edge of a pattern block. For showing purposes it should be crisp and clean.

However, in young Go-Sanke it can often appeared blurred as the pattern is developing and the skin thickening. In British shows where fish on display are often not-finished a degree of tolerance is permitted, two rows of scales at the very max.

When buying, only accept it with unfinished/developing skin.

Bern I must be very confused on this. I thought sashi was the leading edge and kiwa was the trailing edge.
