What are you feelings oon tankless heater versus pool heaters?

I have been contemplating putting a heater on my pond for awhile. As most of you now I live in a Great Area of Santa Cruz Monterey Bay. Unfortunateley not the greatest for growing out koi as the season is short and temps of water only goes up to 72 for about 1 month. Growing koi is nto a concern but having a longer season is. Also want to get past the danger zone temp in spring. Never really and a problem but heck why not.

Now that I am gonna add bit more surface area to my pond and also volumne and bakki shower and chamber I might as well figure in a heater to make plumbing a bit easier.

So with that being said tankless heater or not. By the way my pond is 6k US gallons.

Give me some thoughts on this..

Joe

A heater with a tank allows you to add control and valve options that can prevent a disaster if the heater gets stuck on for any reason (faulty tstat, relay, or valve). Tankless heaters do not have that safety option and cushion. Since you are not just talking about overamping a heater and popping a breaker as in a home hot water situation, it can kill your koi in hours, as Jules can attest. For me, tankless is risky especially if you have investesd alot of time, money, and love into your living jewels.

Go Tankless

Hi,I would go tankless hotwater heater. The pool heaters are not very efficient and most are copper anyways. The tankless through the heat exchanger is a proven system and is pretty efficient. As far as safety I have a indoor remote thermastat with an alarm high and low warnings. This is my systems third winter and has worked flawless, except when I ran out of propane a few times.I am in Ohio and use it alot and would never be with out one again, the benifits are worth the cost.

A tankless with a heat exchanger is much safer, as long as we install appropriate safety controls, limit switches, and valves. The point is to be able to turn off the hot water flowing to the heat exchanger and pond if the heater gets stuck on for any reason. In a home heating application, you know right away if the heater is stuck on, it gets too hot. Open windows call repair man. In a pond, you have to have either safety controls or a warning system of some sort. There are several ways to do that. If not,koi die, float to the surface, and then you know the pond is too hot. A tankless direct, no way, too risky for living things.
