The awards on Koiphen are not some glorious prestigious event. There is no monetary compensation. It's fun and it lets those who are the most helpful feel appreciated. And koidoc is one of the most helpful people on the board. always posting great info on judging and choosing fish. He has spent countless hours posting on the basics of judging fish. Looking to buy a particular fish? send him the dealers photo and he will spend 20 min analyzing it and pick it apart for you. He deserves to know that his friends appreciate the time he has spent helping others. He doesn't deserve to have his reputation smeared by the likes of you.
Sorry.. I don't agree! All that I stated was fact. You can form your own opinions from what happened and I will have mine.

Charlie I have met Art (although I doubt he remembers) and I didn't get the impression you could buy him off with an award or something like that. I mean what for? He has a good job, a beautiful pond and some very nice koi. Why would he risk his reputation. Tempers flair. Its time to move on.

Wow, You are going in the wrong direction if you question my integrity. And you think over a jacket. I doubt they can find one that fits me. I have three jackets with custom names on it from San Diego(do not fit). Have one jacket from Rocky Mountain I wore in Japan this year. I have a closet of koi jackets. I can not wear them all. I would through a show over a jacket. I can work two hours and buy the jacket. Check Jims post out. Maybe you respect his opinion. At the risk of letting out salaries and secrets let me run it down for you. Lets say for a 3 day Judging trip like I just did to California. And I am worse than Jim because my wife is also a Judge and we always travel together

2 airiline tcikets to CA- $1200
my lost 8 hours salary-$800
Wifes lost salary-$350
kennel for dog-$100
Judges Trophy I take-$50
Contributions in raffle tickets or bought items to support the club that invited me-avg. $250
Airline parking and gas-$50
assorted meals-$100
Total-$3000 for one show and I do about 7 Shows a year, because I am so easy to buy
And I would through a show for a jacket? I share a lot of information with Koiphen over the year and the jacket, I assume, is an honor given for helping so many people. I wrote Koiphen an original artcile, just for them. It has since been in many newletters and will be in upcoming KoiUSA. One of the best pieces I have ever written. I have written many articles over the 32 years I have been in this hobby and published around the world. I will be the Keynote speaker at PNKCA next year.If anything, I bribe the clubs to ask me back, not the reverse. I am also a ZNA judge of over 9 years as well.
And I can be bought for a jacket. That would not feed my koi for a month. I appreciate the honor that Koiphen has given, but that is all it is. Jacket or not. And I am even excepting the jacket, from someone that will not show koi.
Give me a break. I know of no judge in this coutry that can be bought at any price and unless you know different I suggest you back off. Like Jim says the math is not there. The only reason for even suggesting it, is to stir up trouble, because it is not a search for education. I think this stinks of slander to even suggest it or refer to this jacket incident. By refering to the Jacket the post got personal. Not just a general question. I guess more stuff that Brian allows.

WAIT a cotton picking minute...no slight meant to you cotton pickers...so I can send pics of the koi I am considering buying to show or enter into a show in the future to a Certified Active Koi Judges and he will tell me which fish is more likely to win....So that wouldn't cause the judge to know my fish nor be more likely to pick it after I bought it on his recomendation?

i can't speak for chucky, but i am disgusted by the way he has acted. i have been mistaken for him in the past, and i used to joke about it, but no more. the hobby owes a lot to those of you who have made it what it is and without judges there would be no shows. it is a tough job, one that i would not do even if i had the knowledge, which i don't. one thing judges don't need is people in the peanut gallery taking cheap potshots at them.

Charlie,

I don't think you've made your case for "judges being on the take", and as Art said it's actually a losing proposition for them monetarily. Why don't we just drop this subject unless you've got something to offer up here other than conjecture. This thread is starting to sound like a rant for rant's sake, and I'm growing a bit weary of all the fighting going here lately.
