Hey Joe, let me answer the question then. In Japan, when you see those pictures of the 85 year old owner standing proudly with his koi or the very well dressed business man standing at attention and receiving his award, do you think he bagged the 36 inch fish and drove it over to the sight in his lexus? The answer is no, he did not! A dealer in Japan is a pure professional. He gathers the fish, delivers the fish, cares for the fish, debugs the fish and returns the fish to the owner. It is all part of the service. To a degree, they are 'partners' in seeing that the fish does well at the show.
In America, only the high end keeper could afford that service, if he or she was lucky enough to have a dealer that would provide that service!
In some shows, it is considered poor sportsmanship for an owner not to be at a show when the fish wins. In truth, it is more about policing dealer abuses than a concern about the amateur owner.
I know of hobbyists who enter shows but will not go to the banquet to accept their award. This may be rude but still it is accepted.
At the end of the day, no one should care about how 'fresh' a koi is off the airplane. The koi is in a beauty contest. No one cares how the fish got there.
Lots of variations and answers here- pick one.
