Fry Pics

Hi all,
New here.
Was just after some opinions on my one month old fry.
I have been casually breeding for the last three years and this year I decided to have a go
with two of my nicer koi the female was a modern showa and the male was a kohaku.
I realize that it is more desirable to breed black based fish together but I have heard of some people having success with Showa/Kohaku and seeing that the only black male fish I had were pond muts so I stuck with the Kohaku. Anyway it's been a month and the fry have been growing really well, their about 15-20mm. They are mostly yellow and black. Basically I was just after your expert opinions on how they look and whether they are coming along as should be expected colour wise. I know it's pretty early to tell anything much but I'm sure that those of you who having been breeding for some time might be able to give me some insight. Like is it normal for them all to have some yellow on them?
I look forward to hearing from you, thanks in advance,
Jim

I assume you are using european time stamp as these pix would be from last spring if you were american.
15-20cm at 1 month would be very good growth, but even at that it is difficult to tell much at such a young age. Culling at that stage revolves around physical deformities rather than color and pattern. Yellow appearing in virtually all fry is to be expected in the early stages of growth. Some will remain so, others will either turn white, orange, or red over time. It is definitely a waiting game.

Thanks for the reply,
Yeah Im actually in Australia hence the dd/mm/yy
Yeah thought it was a little early to tell much..
There are a few deformaties that Ive seen so far but the first cull is going to have to
wait a couple more weeks. This is the fastest Ive seen them grow, other years they have taken
a lot longer to reach this size, quite pleasing. Havent seen any obvious Tobies yet although I'm sure they're in there. They are demolishing the bloodworms that I'm feeding them 3-4 times a day and have even got them to munch off my finger.
Thanks again,
Jim

you have done a good job getting them up so fast...that is key to be sucessful however. your next job besides unlimited live food is continuing to provide lots of growing room-no crowding! And watch for tobies.....another 30 days or so and the kohaku patterns that are so gaint now will be easily recongized. at 60 day's you'll want to make a good heavy sembetsu (cull)

Culling black babies is still a mystery to me. Keep us posted, please. The others look like the usual assortment of kohaku, higoi and shiro muji. Beni often looks yellow at this size.

Cheers, there's alot of luck in there, getting them to this size but I've done what I can,
Starting to run out of Mosquito Larve as they just eat it so quickly. Started breeding the larve in another pond so will keep feeding what I can. Also feeding them frozen bloodworms that they really guts down also. Yeah I'm looking forward to having a close look at them when I do the first cull. Apart from deformities I'm not sure which to cull, although there is plenty of space in the pond so I shall see when the time comes.

I'm taking plenty of pictures Steve so I will keep you posted on what's going on. The last few years the female I used was a Ki Matsuba so all the babies were yellow and they pretty much stayed that way, which made sense, but when I saw all these this year, I was a bit confused. That's a relief anyway. Hopefully there will be at least one or two that are good enough to keep and grow on to a decent size.
Thanks,
Jim

Here they are a week later and I'm starting to notice the Utsuri like pattens appearing on some of the black koi. I am starting to see the changes in colour on the yellow fry, they are very slight but can see whiter areas on some and deeper yellow on others.

Thumbs up

Things are coming along nicely . Not only the Utsuri patterns but some of the yellow seem to be "pinking" a bit. Culling the deformities soon will free up more of your live food for the better prospects to grow and develop on . Looks like you're going to have an interesting mix of kohaku and utsuri, along with a few unexpected surprizes . I would also expect to see some sanke and showa patternts emerge within the month.

Yeah it's all a bit exciting, will do the first cull this weekend I think, there are a few bent spines and deformed jaws in there so the extra room will be handy as they are really growing well. Thanks for the reply.
