the ethics of posting under an assumed identity

is it wrong to post under an assumed identity?

i don't think so.

if a forum wants everyone to post under their real name, they could require it. this forum, like most, does not require it. so what is "wrong" with it?

What is the point of posting under an assumed name? I mean, I get why some would post under names like "Koi Nut", Koi Kichi", etc etc, by why use an assumed "real" name?? Unless one is up to "no good"? I get that point.....

how about if someone else is up to no good.

someone up to no good can pick up lots of personal info on a forum like this, even figuring out where some people live. if i wanted to rob someone's house, would someone who raises koi be a good target? when would they not be at home, maybe during a koi show in another town which they have said they will attend and even said when they are leaving?

call me paranoid. have you ever had your house robbed?

What's in a name? Lots of commercial products take great pride in creating something that has value, that consumer's can rely on. They recognize it because it has a name attached to it.

mention the KB magazine to koi kichi's like us and we know what to expect.

a good name is something to work on to achieve. The pride that you know you represent yourself thru actions and deeds and that they better be good!

what's wrong with masking an identity? Well I quess the lone ranger and zorro did it for years....I quess for me it's just a sense of pride about knowing that what ever I do i'm accountable for it.....

I remember a chant in kindergarden when someone messed up...." shame shame everyone knows your name.....

signed.... anonymous

The most highly rated marketing campaigns in the world use names from people or things we all know and have come to view fondly and trust and see as really contributing to the world. Guilt by association. The largest and fastest growing plumbing contrator in the US is name 'Ben Franklin" and uses his pic on a coin as their logo. They now have over 100 franchises, Ten years agio they did not exist. Ask anyone in the towns they are in, and they will tell you they have been around since dirt, and have recently grown, after all their years of hard work and honetsy! Names are very powerful.

I believe many breeders use characters and names from things in well know cartoons and stories over there. It helps with that luvin' feelin.

Doesn't Joe Bauer make sports equipment, clothes, etc.?

sorry to hear you were robbed.

joe bauer is not my real name, it is the name of the father of a good friend back when i was in highschool. i don't consider it identity fraud to use that name. my friends have called me joe or joe bauer for years.

my best friends call me joe. when they read this forum or others i am posting on, they know who i am. i use "joe bauer" on the internet so no one will know my true identity, for reasons i have already gone over.

and i am not chucky, newt, or the mayor.
