Lightbulb I'm Curious... What did you do with all that Dirt?

I'm asking this out of curiosity....

When I dug my pond the first time, I used the soil to build the waterfall....

The second time I dug the pond, to expand it, I could only use some of the soil... But, I have a mound of it just sitting in my backyard...

What did you guys do with your dirt after the dig... How did you get rid of it....

Thx,
adreamer2

Many folks can bury some pond dirt from a smaller pond on their property. But when you starte excavating 10,000 (20 to 40 cubic yards), you really a dump truck to take it away. I had the main excavation done by use of backhoe and dump truck.

I've seen the dirt set back about 10 feet from the edge of the pond and used to build a planting/landscape mound 2-3 feet high and 6-8 feet wide. It gives the impression of the pond is a bit more secluded with plantings surrounding it.

people are always looking for free fill and will often volunteer to haul it away.

Use the computer and a craig's list nearest your biggest city nationwide. Works like cracy here in seattle

I rented a rock box when digging my pond. I also used some around the yard to give differrent elevation gaines so it didt look too flat.

I also used the craigslist approach for some to haul it away and use.

Adreamer2,

Consider yourself fortunate.

When we had the pond dug there was a mountian of dirt. I was wondering the same as you. "What are we going to do with all this dirt!!!"

Well, we used every bit of it and purchase another 40-50 tons, and could still use more. What looked like a level yard sure used a lot of dirt to level...

You are close to us, but I don't think close enough to justify coming to take it off your hands for you.

don't know how congested your city is but in Bay Area, one can post "free dirt" on http://www.craigslist.org/ and let people come by your yard to take it away.

Here they rent dirt bins. They hold 10 yards of dirt and they range from $200 to $250 per bin. It took us 11 bins to remove all the dirt. We removed 110 yards of dirt from the pond and filter house.

we took some of it in my truck to a friends 4 acre yard and put it in the horse corral until...

the rest we terraced the front yard and used many bins to haul away the rest.
