Naming Koi

OK,

Most of us pretty much name our Koi. As i get my Koi i would like to name them in Japanese that means something about the koi. (I know i'm difficult like that).

Does anyone know of a website that will translate words from English into Japanese?

It would also help if it broke the words down into segments so i can learn how to say the words. Even better would be if the words were spoken and i could hear the way the words are spoken.

i.e:- Good Bye = Sayo - nara.

Honestly, I'd make friends with someone who speaks Japanese (fluently). The same character in Japanese can mean several different things, depending on context. An online translator might not capture the "real" meaning when you're dealing with a single word.

That being said, another alternative to the Google translator is babelfish http://babelfish.altavista.com

Wink

I have an ochiba named "Kaba Kaba".....(NOT Baka )

However, after watching her antics of doing "moon-walking" on water surface, I should rename her "Baka" instead

I was told by a Japanese mentor long ago that "baka" was one of the words he did not allow in his house!

I've found that each koi acquires a name in time. Several began being called by the breeder's name, but it becomes shortened into a nickname. A Maruyama Kohaku is called Maru. When this happens, I do not confuse the breeders.

Up untill now, I've never named my koi. But since I bought my two SFF Showa, I would like to name them to sort of continue the tradition set by their breeder.

Maybe there's a site from Japan (in English ) that says something about the names given to children in Japan, and their meaning. This could help. I know there is a site like that in the US by some government agency.
