Beni question

I have heard a number of time koi do not develop beni as they get older. I have had a number of koi that had very little beni and got a lot more over time. I went out the other day and my tancho that had a real clean body without any beni on it, and now has beni in many areas. What causes the koi to develop beni. The tancho is not a low grade koi, and some of the other were not also.

LOL !

... Without a pic, can't say, but is this solid Hi or the superficial secondary Hi that sometimes appears?

i think there are conditions trhat favor black or red in the kind of water you have.
Different ponds do differentr things.

This spring I bought a dozen hosokai asagi tosai and raised them. I gave my best one to a friend and within two weeks red was everywhere...So I agree with the posters that heredity, environment, and maybe feed can all contribute...

Genetics play the biggest part of wheather hi tends to spread which is typical in asagi for example. Also common to see in Shiro utsuiri which indicates it's genetic linkage to showa. Even more common when showa without red are sold as shiro utsuti. Kohaku's can develop secondary hi or even develop a type of expanding hi but rarely is this type of hi high quality.

I would not call it solid Hi. I will see if I can get a few pictures without stressing her out.

Jim, way to much for cosmetic surgery.

With that PiC.. Looks like genetics... Often we do not know where the fish came from or the genetic bloodline and or Lineage.

Tom, How old is the fish and of course what are the genetics and or breeder.

Also remember that Tancho is Tancho Kohaku... So with it being tancho kohaku then its possible some red may come out. But now it looks tancho sanke so it looks like it has some sanke bloodline in it as well especially with the underying sumi...

Joe, she is a tancho sanke. She is 3 years old and I think from Torazo. I will have to pull up the paper work to be 100%, but it think it is.

I'm sure I can clean up her face, but the Hi by the dorsal will be real hard to clean up.
