Any recommendation for getting good insurance converage for new koi club? Trying some Insurance Brokers here in SF Bay Area, but the quotes are over my head.

Join AKCA, it cost the club $100 per year. If you want to be ZNA, it is still a benefit to belong to both. The coverage will cover all meetings at members homes plus any club activities, such as shows and pond tours, auctions etc..

Thanks Nancy - It is still in process of forming a new club. I knew AKCA covers insurance, but very much want to moving step by step. Forming a club under both AKCA and ZNA at the same time seems to be to much for us....

I have a question: How does an independent club get insurance outside of the AKCA and ZNA norm? Meaning if a club does not want to be affliated with either or..

One to be affliated with AKCA, AKCA covers insurance with a very little cost.
ZNA does not have insurance program to cover for the ZNA chapter.

If a club does not want to be affliated with either - you can get insurance from some insurance company that do have policy to cover it....

Hi Dinh

Why don't you contact Burt Ballou, he worked for the insurance industry before he retired this year. He was in charge of getting all insurance for AKCA, he would know which insurance carrier that could supply you with club insurance.

Take another look at AKCA mambership. They strenously avoid interfering with membership clubs so that shouldn't be a problem for you.

I see you folks are more interested in high quality show koi than pond and filter design so just put that as your mission statement in your bylaws in a way that can't be misinterpreted. That will protect you from evolving into something you didn't originally intend.

It doesn't mean you can't discuss and study the wider range subjects, only that you can control it so it only serves your mission.

Thanks for the tips and info Rich. I am currently an AKCA member as part of SCVKC koi club. I think the intention is more than just "high quality show koi"...
I am still trying to complete the ByLaws draft to present at the first meeting.
The mission you mentioned is part of the Article I of the ByLaws for the new club. Copy the Article I here for you to view:

================================================== ====
Article I - Name and Purpose of the Club
Section A - The name of the Club shall be the Northern California Koi CLub, Zen Nippon Airinkai (ZNA NorCal) Chapter.
Section B - The purpose of the Club will be to promote, create and enlarge the hobby of Koi keeping, breeding, appreciating and exhibiting Koi; to disseminate information about the above to the membership; to engage in educational and social activities related to our purposes; and to acquire and own such property as may be necessary for any or all of the foregoing purposes.
==================================================
Would like to invite you to the first meeting? Is that possible?
Thanks,
--Dinh

Of course I'd like to come to your meeting, if I'm available. When & where.
