IMHO - B,C,D,A.

Tonio, thanks for keeping it an all mail contest! I know A & B are from the bito auction and I know C is from JKO auction and I believe D is also from JKO.

B-My penchant for square sumi is evident in my avatar - I just like the even balance of all three colors on B. I think as this fish matures, the sumi will catch up with the hi in density. What the shiroji does is undeterminable (being a male) as the head could remain yellowish

C- If the rest of the body fills out to match the head, this should become the largest of all 4 in this group. Also, the depth of color will improve. The pecs aren't too large for the head, as in A.

D- Decent body for a male at 2 yr old - head has fair shape, body is very long but thickness from shoulder to tail joint is pretty good. I would like to see this fish in about 2-3 yrs.

A- The pecs are way too large. It definitely shows it's a male! The hi is very nice, shiroji is chasing it - the sumi is developing fairly well, but I think it's going to be too heavy to support the lack of volume this fish will display. Also, it has a typical showa (pointy nose) head

Red face

Too close to home, It is hard to critique sometimes when you find out someone on the forum just bought the koi or the koi cost the same as a new automobile.

Thumbs up C has growth potential

BACD for todays MY POND beauty contest, but C has good potential for growth, A will be great if the kage Sumi fills in, and D will be interesting if the Sumi develops and it beefs up a bit.

Are we rating based on what we think will win shows or personal preference?

For shows, B, D, A, C, now, B, A, C, D in the future, but who really knows how all these guys will look in two years.

For personal, I appreciate the efforts the breeder of D has made to acheive that kohaku pattern and ind it artistic, even though it is not appreciated as much for show due to looking for a solid step pattern with good wrap, so D, B, A, C.

In time the wrap on A and B will make them look much better as large koi. The pattern on D could look pathetically skinny when it gets big.

I also like the potential of the sumi on A and B and the grouping and depth of the black chromatorphes will prove stable and tightly grouped and should surface well.

In this hobby people should have the confidence in what they buy...For me thou, I wouldn't care what people thought of my purchase.

Tonio,

You're absolutely correct. It's nice to get feedback to help improve your eye, but in the long run, you see your fish EVERY DAY, where others get to see and hopefully appreciate them whenever they are invited to. Why do people buy fish to impress others when they are rarely seen by them. Buy what you like, with the emphasis on learning about a particular breeder's bloodline and how they develop in your pond environment. A person's taste constantly is changing in the world of koi, the breeders are constanly trying/succeding at improving their lines, therefore what you bought from a particular breeder say, 3 years ago may be outclassed by his less expensive fish let alone his high end stock this year. It's what makes the world go 'round and keeps everybody in business!!

That's why pattern matters.
