Sexing Koi..... Male/Female Method...

What method do you use when determing the sex of a koi?.... Does it have to be a certain size or age for you to determine or do you go by the method of the shape of the body......

What method do you use to know whether you have a male or female koi in your pond?....

In the spring of the year you can check the gill plate covers and the female with be smooth and the males will have a sandpaper fill to them. Also the females will be fat and full of eggs. Another way is to check for milt and eggs, milt for males eggs for females. I have never tried to check for milt or eggs because giving enough time to mature it is easy to tell.

If you blow on the on the gills and pec they get hard little bumps.. Typical males Watched Sakuma do it a few years ago..

I milk them.. like milking a Kangaroo..
I use all of the " xpert" techniques.... like "them".. I'm about 80% accurate at 14-16 inches.. like " them"
If I know the bloodline ? add another .000065% Like " them"
At 3 years I can go 98%, depending on size /maturity ( not overall appearance)

Like everyone said the male gill plate feels like a unshaven males face. The females gill plates are smooth and soft. Here is my Female Kohaku "Ruby" being sexed last fall. Her bottom, if you will is round and pink. Males are more oval.
