But, Luke, I believe you. ...Now, if you show up with a witness bribed with a day at your resort or all liquored up...well, then I'd probably start doubting you.

and one bit of logic...buying the "best Koi" Trophy is accepted, and that is why it is done. the trophy indicates who owns the best koi at that moment.
Whereas competing for the "best pet koi" trophy is about how well someone has created a koi through building a pond, understanding all the parameters (bloodlines, choosing tategois, nutrition, maintaining water, and just plain dumb luck.)
The owner of the best pet would have the hobby wanting to come by and check out his pond...

Lying to get the trophy would quickly be questioned, and the recipient found out in short order...and the understanding that the lie would quickly be questioned, and the public embarassment of not being what the "Hobbyist" claimed would probably keep all but the most vain and stupid from attempting to publically lie about their "abilities".

Plus pretty much we share pics of our pets here and through Emails...most of us know what the other person is trying to get done, and has to work with.
Except me...i still can't see a foot deep into that lake...the cool thing is that everyday a "different" koi shows up.

the more i think about it though....which trophy would you want? the one your fish won (the GC), or the trophy YOU won (by finding, raising and/or maintaining a good koi?

Personally, the satisfaction of having one of my sh!tagoi pond mutts, born and bred right here in my own back yard even get an honorable mention would be far (or is it fir) more satisfying than buying a GC ringer flown in from Japan. But its late and I just finished my 4th glass of wine so what the he!! do I know?

Cool

I should have stayed out of this, but what the h*ll.

If you do not like the rules, what is preventing you from setting up your own koi show with YOUR rules withwhich you are comfortable?

Back to my egg-nog.

ok, I can agree with this. but you also can't negate the skills it takes to buy such a fish. you need to KNOW what it is you are buying. and also, most people who buy these fish ARE already excellent at koi husbandry and have magnificent ponds with amazing koi in it. So does that person not deserve the respect in the hobby for the other koi in his/her pond? Somebody willing to spend $100K on a koi is somebody who A) Loves koi deeply, B) knows a lot about koi, and C) probably has a pretty amazing pond and koi collection to begin with. I highly doubt that anybody who has brought in a champion direct from the dealer is somebody who doesn't know anything about koi and doesn't have a pond with great collection already.

The reason it is ok to have the dealer deliver the koi is because when dealing with fish of this quality, they need to best environment possible. it is a disservice to the fish to degrade its environment in a hobbyist pond. I don't care how nice it is, it ain't as good as a Japanese breeders mud. also, purchasing a fish such as this is an investment. you need to protect that investment. The best and safest place for that fish is again...with the breeder. Lastly, in Japan, for the ALL Japan show, the breeder will INSIST on keeping the fish and delivering it himself for fear the hobbyist will damage the it. they invented the hobby, they get to decide what is right or wrong

I say the person who brings in a champion from the breeder also deserves a lot of respect for having the love and passion for koi that they would be willing to invest in such a creature and then share it with the world.
