Keirin Koi/Isa Showa Judging Contest

Here are the photos of the six female nisai showas ranked by Isa San at Kerin Koi Open House on Saturday. These showas were judged for today just like koi show. I'll give everyone a day or so to post your rankings then I will post how Isa San ranked them. Also for extra bragging rights select the best Tategoi from this group as picked by Isa san.

Hey Ray . . .

I'm too old and the wrong sex to win -- so I won't even try!

just a few observations over the years as I've watched this man's koi develop in other's ponds.
While koi C has a classic body shape, the others are more typical for their age
of this man's koi. Cobby in appearance in so much as the heads are big and bodies are long. But in what I have observed is they seem to grow length and depth before finally getting around to width.
I noticed this with matsunosuke sanke a few decades ago, that they seem to
stretch long before putting on any width.

will be interesting to learn what the breeders take on it is....

appreciate the posting

My ranking

Well since no body else wants to play I will. I will go with d, e, c, f, a, b, and for the extra point I would say that c has the most future potential. I am also sure of course that I got this wrong as I have yet to agree (initially) with a breeder or dealer in a selection like this. I hope you provide some of Isa's commentary on his ranking. That would be very helpful.

Ray, ask yourself... other than C, the others won't stand a chance in a state or national level koi show! It's difficult to judge cos the rest are of almost the same standard.

I will be like KoiCop... I will reserve my judgement... Thanks.

yeah, I'll agree with the negative posts as afar as what they look like now...
BUT Karl flew in the Breeder. And would this Breeder want his scrubs being sold with his blessing.
And if he did as you say wouldn't he NOT be able to generate "the love" the next time he wants to do this?

So I am guessing that they all must be tategoi, and we are too naive to know the line.

Tategoi for sure

These fish will be grand in a few years. I hope that the people who eventually buy them will save the "now" pictures and keep us updated. I think that most non-showa fans will be surprised. I anticipate that there will be several people giving themselves sprains from trying to kick themselves for not buying them as nisai when they had the chance.

People, I think the lesson is about comparing fish. Certainly the deal is not pure but who would think otherwise? Its called 'the koi BUSINESS' . But still it doesn't mean you can't learn something! I'm sure the breeder/dealer would still rank them honestly. These exercises are great and no one has a better eye than a breeder. You just don't want these kinda guys at an actual koi show or the 'street cred' of the show is shot. JR
