Pond Color

I have read different colors of the pond liner will inhance or fade the colors in different koi. Is this true? And if so, how do you choose the best pond color if you want to keep a variety of koi in it.

I put my Shiro in a white cooler for treatment. He or she lives in a dark olive green pond with fairly good sumi. That fish turned almost white like a chameleon. I guess lizards and fish are related, but that was dramatic.

Stick with a black liner!!! Blue or white will make the sumi look washed out on many koi.

Yes it is true. Years ago I used a white 800 gallon QT tank and it always messed up the colors on the koi. Most of the time it would come back in a short time after they went into the pond. Some koi ever looked the same. Black would be the only color I would use. I even order my show tanks in black for this reason.

When we put our ochiba shigure in our new white q-tank a few years ago she almost turned white too. I had never heard anyone say that this would happen so I just thought it was the stress from shipping and settleing in. When we moved her to the pond the next spring she almost went completely black so I knew that their surroundings had a lot to do with the way they looked. The q-tank now has algae on the sides but white is not a good color for koi.
Most surfaces will be coated with a nice dark green color in time.

As far as the color of the pond goes it doesn't matter in in the long run. I know a guy who fibreglassed his pond blue... it all turns green in the end
