How fresh is fresh? I know most foods are packaged in a UV resistant packaging and vacuum sealed...is freshness still an issue...

There are 3 direct importers for Hi-Silk in California alone: Enkoi, Tsekoi and Japankoionline. The others koi dealers buy from those above importers.

Another issue is freshness. A good relationship with those direct importers will help, as many food manufacturers refuse to put production date on the bag. Marketing 's objection?. One can guess the production date by subtracting the recommended USE-BY date by 2 years! LOL, most of the vitamins are long gone! Another strategy of avoiding stale food is tasting the food yourself! If the biscuit tastes is like clean sh*t then it's good! If a bitter taste is detected then you got bad/spoil food. MA Le

I gotta know (but have no intention of conducting my own personal double blind research ), just exactly what does "clean sh!t" taste like as opposed to "dirty sh!t"???

Yes PaPaBear, will try my best to clarify.

Clean sh*t means healthy, safe, non-vormitting induced smell/flavor; however, the taste is strange and acquired. The taste of good koi food is similar to refrigirated 2-day old tuna-flavord plus real camembert cheese biscuit ... how many can you eat? won't kill you for sure. MA Le

Nancy already posted the price for the Ogata Silk Power. The price for HiSilk 21 this year was $75 per 5 kilo bag. Tsekoi.com still has some in stock if you wanted it now. The freshness isn't a serious issue with HiSilk due to it being vacuum sealed with nitrogen. Should easily last a year if unopened and the packaging has not been compromised.

new food

There is a new silk-based food coming out momentarily. It is called OSI and brochures are already out there. There is OSI-168, an all-season growth food--wheat germ, silk pupae, and spirulina, 34% protein with garlic and spirulina thrown in for $88 for 15 kilo, $47 for 5 kilo.
OSI-188 is for high color, with much the same ingredients. They are also going to make koi treats, either silk worm pupae or dried shrimp.
The food is made by Ocean Star International, a big guy in the aquaculture sector.

It will be available after the new year. I know for sure that Koi Enterprise (koienterprise.com) will have it, but it will be distributed in the NoCal area by the same people who distribute Hai Feng--maybe the same for your area.

I like Hi-Silk better than Ogata Silk Power...My fish looked more stressed using Silk Power. Plus I ahve been using Hi-Silk the past 5 years and it is a great product.
