soelistyo,

nice to know that your showa has reached 71 cm. Any pics to share?

cheers

Excellent and informative article. Hard to believe the skinny Kohaku on the right is the same thick bodied beauty pictured on the left, but stable patterns don't lie. The Sanke and Kindai Showa are absolutely stunning.

I think after everything is said and done, what I focused on from what your friends said was that ALL OF THE KOI FROM THAT SHIPMENT had slow growth. I think I would be concerned only if some folks other than myself were having better results....then I'd start to question the difference? This will be an excellent chance for all to learn if they can keep track of how the koi over the years grow and mature to see what differences may have had a positive influence.

I was last to daiinichi's in 2000 into his tategoi greenhouse by the river. I saw a 4 year old showa male that was incredible....looked very female except for the pecs.....

My Dainishi showas

Hi all,

I have visited the Dainishi farm several times from 1997 till 2004 and my experience was that they produce generally "firm" bodied koi already at young age (2 to 4 years). Their growthrate is not like Momotaro or Sakai Hiroshima but still "good".
But I must admit, I only looked at nissai and older koi. I don't know if the babys look more skinny. Also I visited Dainishi always immediatly after Ike age. I guess there will be a difference by the time they return to the mudponds after 5 month of non feeding!
The pics show some Dainishi nissai showas that I bought in nov 2003.
One photo is from nov 2003 when they were 46 to 48 cm. I left these koi for growing in Japan (the pic shows 4 showa but the one on top right is not mine)
The other pic was made nov 2004. Sizes then were 57 to 58 cm so +/- 10 cm growth. I think the bodies do not look slim at all. One remark about this pic; it was made one day after harvesting and the koi just had a PP treatment so their colour does look a bit strange in this pic.
I do not have pics from this years harvest as I have not been able to go to Japan this autumn. I expect (....hope) they did put on another 5 to 7 cm (more if lucky).
Cheers, Hans

haven't studied about the growth of Dainichi yet. This is an excellent data. Thanks much Nelson for the info.

have two Dainichi, one Kohaku and one showa. Don't have any pix of the showa, will take some pix of it when back from vacation...

Not so sure Dainichi Kohaku and Showa come from the same bloodline or not. Here are pictures of my kohaku. The first one (around 7.5 to 9") was taken by the dealer in 2002. The second one was taken around May of 2005. She is now around 22".

Thanks for the link as that helps alot. But if these koi are somewhere that the temps are warm all year round then what? Would if be the bloodline that is causeing the koi to grow long but skinny since they dont have winter months. How can someone get the same body from there koi without being able to winter over?

KFG

I still believe it goes back to what I posted earlier. Different parents produce differing results, including growth rate. I think you and your friends got a group of fish from the same parent stock which is used to produce that particular type of product. Being able to go to Japan to see the available stock first hand makes a huge difference and allows you to buy what you like directly from the breeder - not what the dealer brings back that you can pick from.
