Mike,

That's the real thing happen and there's no hormones like a thread you mentioned involved. The koi was kept by the dealer until now and i do believe it's all because he has good water condition, sophisticated filtration system, good feeding regime, the food itself, and lastly good genetic on the koi. Her siblings couldn't get the size like she has. Now the showa has put some girth and thick ozutsu. The growth was in 8 months and i believe the growth speeding was in april to oct. In my not well pond system, my kohaku could gather about average 3 cm/month growth until now she is 55 cm already.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. The fact that a dealer was growing it on is still impressive. Was this dealer where you are located or was he in Japan? Also, you especially mentioned food. What was he feeding her?

Love to see her picture before and after if you have them

Regards

Mike

I'll post the pic once i get back from my vacation, Mike. The dealer who's keeping my koi is in the same region as mine where overhere we don't have winter season, so I beileve the koi could be fed through all the days. The food he use to feed the kois mainly come from ogata. He uses ogata wheatgerm, performance and silk power.

Thanks for the info. Adealer friend sells the Ogata line of food and I've used it in the past. Looks like I may have to go back to it as well as we are having extreme difficulty getting Hai Feng products any more in northern California. The difference in cost is gonna kill me, but we all gotta eat right!?!

How was your experience on using that ogata food in the past time anyway? I'm experimenting on using the food produce by some top farms over Japan and still wondering the right formula for my region climate. And yes, surely we have to eat first and the the kois

I had very good results using the growth food. I don't feed super high protein foods or color enhancers-I want to see the growth first and the finish second. Keeps patterns from stretching too fast and breaking apart. Just started using "koi clay" again. I'm going to do it religiously this time for several months to see if it will reduce my TDS. I still want to lower my GH as it remains at around 300ppm, but am waiting for someone to post the "real" right way to do it here in California. My mains water is supplied by a company with it's own wells and they treat it biologically with no chlorine or chloramines. I'm very lucky that way as the other water suppliers in my area have really crappy water (for fish keeping) coming from the tap.

If anyone has a success story about lowering GH please let me know. Also, I'm kicking around the idea of a water softener. The tap is VERY hard - we have to clean the mineral deposits off the faucets in the house every few months by soaking in vinegar!! Will the water softener by itself reduce my GH to an acceptable level?

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,

Sorry for very late replying. But as promise is a promise, this is the pic of my dainichi showa. She was about 24" that time.

Cheers,

Thanks for remembering. Fish is doing very well indeed. Color balance at this stage looks very good for continued growth. Get her as big as you can before you bring up the colors.
