Dainichi Showa

Can anyone please tell me how these showa grow. Do they grow long and then put on girth or what. Just wondering cause of couple of my friend have two from the same spawn that they are growing out for a grow out compition and they are not happy with the koi growth. They said the whole batch that was sold was growing slow. Is the the norm for this type and bloodline.

I really think it depends on which parent stock the fish came from. Dainichi has more than one pair of showa oya. I have a male inazuma showa I got from a local dealer 2 years ago as a tosai of around 10". The fish today is approx. 18" and thin. Pattern is very nice and still developing all 3 colors. I agree that it seems that most of the Dainichi fish brought in by dealers in the U.S. are of this caliber. If you want something special from Dainichi, you almost need to go to Japan yourself and pick it. That way you can inquire about the parents and see how the fish will develop. Other than this, I think we get all the chuppa here. Their fish are very expensive and the dealers are only looking to buy what they can sell here for a reasonable price, otherwise they get stuck with it until the right person comes along or they put it on sale for cheap.

I think it's about genetic matter. I just bought a kindai dainichi showa which on last April 2005 was just about 10" and two weeks ago was 25".

What the h@#ll are you feeding?? I know there was a thread about growth hormones a while back - you didn't get into that did you?!? You mean to tell us that you put 15" of growth on a Dainichi fish in 7 months? Something fishy here!?!

Can you post a pic for me? Everyone I have talked to say they cant get good growth from these koi and they are long and skinny untill they get olders. Then they put on girth. Is this what most of you have experienced?

I have tried to research the dainichi showa. From what I understand, they do not feed their koi from oct to april from ages 3-5yrs(if I recall properly). The koi get long and thin from this fasting. This is the time to buy...as they are cheaper. They will then fill out with better conformation as an adult. They claim it loses all its fat during this fasting..and this will not happen with other bloodlines.

I have a kindai showa from Oomo(which presumably uses Dainichi-related oyagois). My koi actually grew long and skinny, she is starting to fill out. She is about 24" today.

Article on Dainichi

Please read the following article. Just trying to pass on some information. I personally don't know about the development or growth of Dainichi koi. http://www.japankoionline.com/conten...ofile/b02.html

i have a couple of female dainichi showas. one of them was born in 2000, 65cm now and seems to have stopped growing and still skinny. won a first prize showa in Singapore show at her size group as a 50cm sansai.

the other is the one i like better. born in 2002 so now 3.5 years old. first saw her at 20+cm in June 2003. grew to 50cm in Jan 2004, 60cm sansai in August 2004 and at last measurement in Sept 2005 was 71cm. has good girth and striking sumi.
