growing huge kois in a flash??????

Hi guys! im so new here...I know this forum is for pros, but im happy I have signed up here. Queries are answered fast and direct to the point. Just want to share somthing.....I know you guys have heard of "ionized water" A few years back, I was watching this segment on TV about japan, anything about japan...their beautiful places, and success stories, unique ideas of japanes people....They once showed this japanese guy who use an "ionizer" the makes ionized water that helps increase growth rate of his goldfish and kois. And I can still remember that day,.was so shocked to see his suoer jumbo goldfish etc. Ionized water increases the fish metabolism and its growth rate...it is used also in groing huge vegetables etc. This just occured to me that my aunt bought a small water ionizer for home use. Her doctor gave her high praises about ..he said it was healthy etc,,,now is that water ionizer my aunt bought has the same principle the guy from japan is using? does ionizing the water increases the groth of fish? Saw a website also a few days back(w/c i forgot to save) this american guy also showed some jumbo goldfish and he said he uses a water ionizer also....so uys...is this true????????

tnx
happy new year to you all!!!!!

I think it's just human nature to think that "out there" is an easier way to do something, a magic cure etc.

Thanks Jim, I had not seen that web site!

Hi killroy,
There are a number of Bentonite clays on the market today. these clays work well in inproving water quality. montmorilenite or Bentonite clays are one and the same. These clays function on the principle of adsorption through Ionic Bonding. The clay encapsulates organic molecules, trapping them in the platelets of the clay through this attraction. I am a firm believer in these clays and use them once a week. Perhaps this will give you a better and less expensive way to go. Any question a new hobbyist asks should be taken with the intent to help lest we forget how we all started in this hobby.

ah....

thanks louie....new info for me. I always right new info in my small koi ntbk.
My very small pond right now is made out of cement. Would it make any difference if my pond was made out of clay bricks or tiles? if yes, im planning to put clay tiles on my pond as my flooring and siding. I know this is far from the real mud pond.....aesthetically, my pond would look better and i hope there is a small contribution to water quality though

Jay,

My pond is made of gunite with plastic cement to seal and give a smooth finish. The alkaline in cement leaches and mixes with the pond water keeping the pond water on the alkaline side of the chart. koi prefere this water hardness. Remember a new pond must be cured before introdusing koi. There after only small amounts of alkaline will be introdused into the water. I always recommend to folks that are building a linner pond to add some cinder blocks to the system [not in the pond ]I use 1 per 1000gal. Change out once a year. Oh yeah, I have a 1000gal holding tank made from linner.
Back to the subject of clay. Use it as an additive and your water quality will only improve. A sound filtration system and clay will give you sparkling water.Do a internet search on Bentonite and you will be amazed at its uses. I prefere Refreash powder from Japan. I also use Dixie Bond [calcium]Southern Bentonite. I alternate between the two. Use 2 1/2cups per 6000gal. Water will turn cloudy but goes away in a few hours. Do not waste your money on tileing a pond unless its at the water line and above for looks.
