Maybe tomorrow I will try to hook up some lights to get some better resolution pics. The beni on these is nice and even, expect the two step kohaku, he got his head stuck in a pipe and damaged the beni behind the pecs so it looks uneven now. The sanke has one spot of secondary hi that came up this month, looks like it'll go away pretty quick. The other kohaku has a deep red beni the pics don't do justice to. The two step also has really nice fukurin you cannot see too well in the pics. Hopefully it will heal, it already looks much better. It even grew the scales back. They are all between 16-18", the bigggest one slightly over 18, the smaller sanke slightly under 16. They were born in the beginning of March 05 from the best I can calculate.
KFG, I hope I did not offend you, I am just trying to light a fire under yer butt.
How many gallons per day do you run of well water into the ponds? I agree with you on the stocking rates for growing out large koi, not sure you need to worry quite that much at 12" though, maybe when they hit 18-22. That might help to give you some more culling room to play with. I would proabbaly keep 50-100 in an 86,000 gallon until they hit about 18, then I would sell the ones I liked less and make room as they got bigger. Kind of a 'slow cull'.
Tell me how many gpd you need of clean water, and I will try to find you a solution for under $300/yr. Also need to know what size pipe you run to each pond. How's that? Well water is still hard. If you soften it it will change what grows in the mud, which means diet change and better growth and color. The 'type of mud', from what I have gathered from most japanese sources I trust, is not that important. Have you seeded in any spirulina or started a shrimp hatchery yet? Shrimp hatcheries are real easy.
Doing those two things will give you better colors and also growth and cut your food bills down, which well help give you more for other things, like more ponds or to feed more fry to bigger until you get 'the eye' for culling. I am lucky enough to have such a big land plot available, I can growout all but the deformed fry to four to six inches or even bigger so I can see how the different ones look when small and when a little bigger.
If you need to sell your chuppa for money to keep going forward, pm me.
