Surfhead you are not even near the mark
Lets say you go to a breeder that has just pulled his tosai pond and sorted his tatagoi So he has 3000 fish and he will keep 150 of those as tatagoi. The rest are tatishita. If you want the next best 150 you can buy them for lets say $20,000 ($133 each)
OR
You can buy the whole lot and it will cost you ... $20,000 ($7 each)
It's true! BUT do you think anyone can run a buisiness on $20,000? Of course not! Let us say that in the years to come those remaining 150 fish bring in an average of $3,000 each. Do the math, that is $450,000. So those tatishita represent less than 4.5% of the breeders income. Hardly something to keep him afloat.
The low end fish keep the DEALERS afloat. The breeder couldn't give a rat's behind about them. The longer he has them on the property the more they cost him. All he wants is to be rid of them. Plenty more where they came from.
