Winter Time Pond Temp

What has been your experience in outdoor conditions during the winter regards to pond temperatures, how low can we go?

My experience, once a newby, we allowed winter to have it's way with our pond, water temperatures probably as low as high 30's to low 40's F. In the spring we had all types of health problems along with losing koi.

We have learned to now cover our pond, have a deep pond (9ft) where we pick up the ambient temp gains from the soils along with heating. Right now we are allowing water temp for koi to go as low as 56 F but no lower. Our learning curve took about 2 years and now three ponds later to get it right.

I try not to let the winter temps drop below 65, if they do I unhook the chiller
