UENO SHOWA - Tategoi?

Hi Koi Kichis, This Ueno Showa was purchased as another educational project. Ueno kois are a novelty here and from what we see in the Nichirin magazine, they can be Jumbos and stunning. Secondly, the Kage sumi; how will it develop? This koi’s development will be highly educational.

The Hi is relatively even and should continue to get better. You cant see the quality of the Shiroji from this pic but it is good. Pattern is very balanced with good placement of Hi, Sumi and White. The haed start with Sumi and ends with Sumi. There is “meware” and sumi on the shoulder and the all important motoguro. I am sounding like a used car salesman. This koi is very affordable. Bcos I bought her off a set of photos, I was given a 50% off!.

How do you think the koi will develop? What are your predictions?

tHE HEAVY BLACK WILL KEEP THIS KOI IN THE STANDARD OF WHAT WAS CONSIDERED BY THE "OLD TIMERS" TO BE SHOWA.

Today's modern or kindai has lots more white, but your koi has just enought

to highlight the black, nicely.

I hope the cage lingers for a while. I actually like it as a compliment to the solid black.

it's a beautiful koi and I hope you keep it well!

Predicting what young showa will do is almost impossible - even showa breeders can and do make mistakes in what to keep and what to sell. Showas are so changable and that's why I find them one of the most exciting koi to keep.

I have been told to look for showas with some small area of finished shiny black near the front of the showa. Here is a slide I use when giving a presentation on how to select young showas. Study it and you will be way ahead of the curve which might mean you can predict pretty well 10% of the time vs 5%.

Thumbs up 50% off!!!

I wish I knew more about Showa development, but I'll toss in my 2 cents worth anyway. Nice looking beni, and much of the Sumi seems to have consolodated nicely already. It is the Kage Sumi that leaves me guessing. If it only consolodates 50% with the remainder receding to white it will still be a very nice one IMHO. The facial pattern is very good and the body overall looks nice and strong. The head seems longish and a bit pointed, but I gather that is typical for most Showa. I hope it lives up to its potential

Talking Same Showa both pix???

Amazing. If it wasn't for the stable beni pattern a person looking at these two pictures would be hard pressed to identify them as being the same fish. Thanks for that.

I think Im learning because the study showa of before and after is what I would have looked for in a young showa because the under lying sumi will come up. I did not know about the one spot of deep sumi and glad to know that. What has the bold mark of sumi got to do with the other sumi that is still coming up? I would look for a showa with a lot of hi so when the sumi does come up maybe it wont overpower the showa.

By the way this is a good study pic of the same koi. And I love how the one has developed so far. Now my other question is the kaga that is on one side of the koi will it develop into solid sumi like the rest or will it stay the same. I dont really understand how kaga sumi develops. Im thinking that it will stay speckled and just get deeper in color Am I close?

Ok for the euno showa I am thinking that the solid sumi will be deeper when finished and the kaga sumi will deepen into solid sumi specks. But this is just a guessing game for me as I still have loads to learn about showa development.

Just realized the 3rd showa photo didn't load so I added it above. You do not want lot of finished sumi in a young showa or it will finish too early and have to much black. The reason you want some of the finished sumi to be deep black and shiny to demonstrate the quality of sumi. A showa with a greyish/brownish black is not nearly as good as one with deep shiny black. We are looking for quality of black not just pattern. Finally you want some finished black near the front because the sumi tends to be weaker in the front just as red tends to be weaker in the back of a koi. So some small finished black near the front demonstrates high quality potential sumi - unless it doesn't!
BTW - find a young showa like the one pictured and expect to pay big bucks if the breeder would even sell it at a young size
