Tricide-Neo.....

Has anyone had any experience with this dip for ulcers?...

Just curious as to how it works... any downside?...

Yes I have used it and it works like a dream you cant beat the stuff. Direction say to dip for five days, in three days the ulcers on my koi were well.
The med is not cheap so what I done was my koi were 15 inch koi I used a small gallon bucket and mixed that amount of meds for 1 gallon of water, it was cramped in the bucket but it only has to say in the meds for 5 mins so it was not that hard on the koi. I cover the bucket with my net so he coudn't flop out and then next day dipped again and I left the bucket of water sitting in the shade so it would not get to hot and dipped again the next day, I only had to dip 3 times.

Make sure you correct the problem with your water quality or your problem will just come right back. You have a bad bacteria in your water that is causing the ulcers so it is important that you correct that the same time you are medicating your koi.

jUDY, good advice!.

What tickled me most was your very true statement about if you don't change the water quality it will happen again!

I'd suggest those that need to use it get acess to some air and Put the fish and medicine in a bag and float it during the treatment. As stated it is expensive, but by floating in a bag of water that just covers the koi you can frugally use just what you need. Some suggest to reuse the bag/water but I think you can start with fresh each application because you were frugal.

Caution! This is maybe what you HAVE to do once ulcer disease as gotten hold but it 'cures' nothing. Uclers are the result of excess bacteria count in your water or a fish that can not resist infection due to water quality issues or 'personal health problems'.
Topical treatment of any kind will kill surface bacteria. But aeromonas creates ulcers by moving deep in the epidermis and dermis and 'eating outward' Therefore once an ulcer has appeared, topical treatment works well. It also guarantees scared fish!
The migration of meds across the gill barrier is iffy at best. Injectables work from the inside out in a predictable dose and do not rely on gill/environment transfer. Simple betadine will sterilize the surface infection and with gentle but deliberate rubbing action, problematic dead tissue can be removed.
The bag idea is interesting because it also gives the pond environment a chance to rebound without the koi in it. Everyone has noticed how even the removal of one or two fish, or the stopping of feeding for a few days, improves water quality. This also correct NOTHING long term but at least it creates better water quality in the moment.

JR. I tried that with my koi to start with and it did not work for me. I used betadine and peroxide and extra strenght denture power and in two weeks they still were not well. The days after the dip and they were good to go.

I wonder why my koi have no scares?

and dipped again the next day
KFG, did you place your koi back in your water or did you outright change the water and clean down your pond?.....

And James, when you "rubbed down" your koi, how did you anesthetise it?... Did you use clove oil, if so, how much did you administer?....

Hay Dick, If it weren't for the guys like you on board I would have killed all my koi this past summer.

I had pea gravel in the bottom of my pond that caused the problem and I thought I was getting it clean and I wasn't, over time a aeromonas bacteria set up and all my koi developed ulcers, took me two hole days to get that gravel out and I have not had a problem since. Now when I clean the pond its clean and the water stay good and clear.

I have learned a bunch since coming to this board and I visit other boards but none can compare to the members here. This board has been refered to as the Pro's Board and they are right!!!

To any new ponders I strongly suggest that you learn about what quality FIRST as this is what it takes to grow and keep beautiful koi. And never put gravel in a pond, you WILL BE SORRY.

Yeah the bag idea is better, and you can keep it as long as you keep it inside and out of the sun. It will be ok.

I removed all my gravel from the pond after I got my koi well but it was only in a couple days time that I done this because I knew that if I did not the problem would just come back. If you have peagravel in you pond get rid of it.

I dipped my koi and then returned them back to the main pond. I like this as it will stress some koi out more to move them to QT but this was a water quality issue and not a parasite or desease problem, so I knew all my koi were in trouble and affected so the pond was in a way my QT, If I had not went ahead and fixed the problem it would have not done any good to dip the koi.

I use a large piece of PVC pipe to catch my koi, it is only about 1 foot long and when I get in the pond they run up in the pipe I put the net over one end and at the same time I pick the pvc pipe up and let the koi go into the net and it only takes a few minutes to catch them. I have only had one time when they did not want to go into the pipe and it took about 15 mins to finaly get them in, but most of the time it is very quick and easy to do.

I wouldn't put pea gravel in my pond... It's nice, but koi scratch against it... I don't like it inside the pond at all.....
