Lightbulb Koi Clones anyone?

Since the world famous dolly the sheep was cloned it has opened up another avenue of possibilities in the our hobby. Is anyone actively cloning Koi? Would the top breeders consider this as there top broodstock dies off? Would you buy a cloned koi? Would a breeder want to clone a dying grand champion before it passed away? I find this an interesting topic & am interested in everyones opinion on this.

Personally I think that if there was no harm done to the koi donors, that the offspring was healthy & the Koi was represented as a cloned fish I would buy one. I am not a scientist & dont have any knowledge of this happening but it would be interesting to see.

Wish it was that easy, koi breeding in general is such a random thing of what you see is what you get...

all the cloning I have heard of was done on mammals. can you clone fish? also I don't think the same formula of genetics will apply so I am not sure cloning would give you the same quality of fish. My guess is its the same odds as raising just one egg from an entire spawn...odds are it will be crapagoi.

Even if it could be done would it be worth it?

Clone a GC today and by the time it is in contention for a GC spot the hobby will have moved on. Take a look at the old GC's of six or more years ago - would they be in contention today?

Could a champion of Lorans caliber beat a Sakura Hime....or Inazuma Showa beat a Maruyama Showa?

I don't agree. I think cloning is the future, and bloodlines will shrink. But not in my lifetime thankfully!

When that happens, the hobby stagnates. So hopefully not in my time either.

When I look back at some of the early fish I bought (and the money I paid for them) I could get better fish for less at the majority of mid-level Koi dealers in the UK.

I would think that since the Japanese are so ancestry conscious they would want to preserve some of the old bloodlines. This could maintain a placeholder in the breeding cycle. You could then go back with clean genetics and start in a whole new direction. In any case I thought this was an intriguing question but it seems I'm in the minority here.

I think there is a difference between cloning and genetics...Preserving a bloodline in preserving the genetic makeup of a bloodline is what you and Mary are talking about then. Your right thou in saving some of the old bloodlines...The main lines at are at the forefront of the koi hobby are the: Matsunosuke, Sensuke, Dainichi....
