Filter Configuration - feedback much appreciated!

I am planning a 70 ton pond. Intending to have 2 bottom drains feeding 2 separate filter systems.

Each to have flow rate of approximately 17tons/hr - ie pond will turnover once every 2 hours.

The first system will first go through a vortex of approx 5tons, giving a dwell time of approximately 17 minutes, this will then go through a mechanical filter, at this stage thinking about static K1. Which will then go through a japanese matting/matala.

The second filtration system will go through a fluidised bed directly - with no mechanical filtration/settlement.

Idea is that I will have debris free (as much as possible) water going through matting, which is difficult to clean, with the self cleaning fluidised bed not having an issue with going anaerobic anyway.

I will have a few more months before work begins - any feed back much appreciated!

Each Air-domed BD to it own filter system is a good idea. Suggestions:

• Use same filter design and pumps on all BDs so that if one is down, the same water is being produced...just in less volume
• first chamber static K1 or seive or VSM....
• second chamber fluid bed K1 or similar
• third chamber matting chamber
• third chamber feeds pumps to UVs and to TPRs
• completely seperate circuit is skimmmer(s) to pump to bead filter UV to waterfall (in summer) and bypass (in winter).

Hi MCA,

I've noticed on few occasions you've suggested using K1 in the first chamber. Are you talking about the settlement or not. If so why K1 in the first, just curious

Jon, I don't think MCA will mind if I answer that....it's a pretty much accepted
strategy that if you use k-i in an upflow situation (static-meaning no movement)
it will act as a mechanical filter and stack up the solids for periodic cleaning.Basically it initially floats on top when first introduced and as as it ages it sits just below the surface trapping debris as the water run thru it.

The next chamber has moving k-1 the movement caused by air from the bottom which exposes the bacteria to all the nutrition in a swirling undulating mass .

Thanks for the explanations, much appreciated. I was thinking of adding this to my settlement to help me battle the floating waste coz atm I uses bird netting and kind of works but with K1 I think it will give better results. Obviously still need to add air to this system for cleaning, don't I???

Jon, the static mechanical filter is just what the easy from EA is. You use the air just when you clean it, like you use the blower on a bead filter. So only for a few minites at a time.

MCA, the best solution is to have identical filtration setup but to do so, I will need to reduce my settlement chamber to each one, meaning there will be more solids going to the matting, hence my preference to have two separate and different systems – any thoughts on this?


Regarding material for fluidised chamber, it will either be K1 or another material available here in Australia – looks like chopped up straws.

Also wondering – has anyone thought about using a pump for backwashing static K1 rather than using air? Would be much stronger I thought.
