It may be that when all the other things get you burned out its time to just enjoy the simple part of the hobby. Enjoy the fish, the serenity of the pond & leave all the other things behind until you recharge your batteries.

I've never been close to burn out but I do get frustrated with the challenges of getting my pond "right". Don't get me wrong- I like it when I put in the effort and it comes out right but since I've done the pond myself , I have to live with the consequences of my mistakes. Nancy- you are in a very inviable position- getting to work for/with a large dealer. I would love to have that opportunity. I'd also like to have the opportunity to place some fish in a domestic mud pond each year and see the results in the Fall. I'm not there yet. The same as what was previously expressed, I get a buzz out of purchasing koi but I desire to keep my pond population down so that is a struggle. Fortunately my tastes have improved and a desirable fish must have a long list of features that you just don't come by easily at the price I'm willing to pay. But burn out- no way.

i've stopped for about 3-4 months (due to a single fish loss)
to pursue another hobby, after purchasing most of its upgrades I've come back to koi to upgrade stuff yet again.

I've not come close to burn-out .. yet, anyway. But, this hobby is still progressing for me. There's a lot I would have liked to do this past year that I just could not take the time to do. I really do mean to get to the Quality Koi harvest next October. I've not been to any of the California shows. I've not been to Japan. I want to get a half-dozen yellow-stained tosai Shiro Utsuri straight from a mud pond and raise them to 5 years of age, and see some one of them turn blinding white. I'd like to see a large pond with just fully mature single-color koi gliding lazily along the surface...Soragoi, Benigoi, Chagoi ... and even Shiromuji. I want as perfect a Tancho as I can find, and I need to get some Yamabuki, imperfections guaranteed. I want to understand why I've not got the right algae growing on the pond walls. And, why is it that I either draw males or females with fading Hi in every grow-out contest?

This week the Farlowella cats in the angelfish tank spawned and I've not done anything to save the eggs from being cichlid food. Creeping burn-out on aquaria-keeping?? Maybe. The koi seem to keep pushing all my other interests to the side.

Heck, I burn out on koi at least once a year and have to move to something else. Just back off on the feed rate (koi will not starve to death) and let it ride for a while. If your system works with a full feed load, it will coast along with much less maintenance once you back off the feed. Eventually, the spark will return.

Burn out from the hobby no, but from shows-yep. Dead tired after show for 4 days and come time to clean up - where is everyone? We don't show so we have always helped clean up when we could. This last show well......Come time to go home at a reasonable time we're out of there at the next show. I hate being that way but we don't have much vacation and having to stop at urgent care on the way home is going to far. Not gonna happen again.

I stopped keeping koi for 2 years.I shut myself away from koi completely because I couldnt afford them anymore.I used to go to Japan once or twice a year.It went to a point that, whenever I see a koi that I liked, the price was way beyond my budget.I got very frustrated, and finally due to a mudslide near my house,I decided to stop! Now I'm back again and slowly building up my collection. But I still see kois that I love to own and cant afford them.I have to keep reminding myself that I love kois too much to stop!Cheers.

Not burn out but...........

I do not know if I will call it burn out but it has crossed my mind a few times and then I go outside and see them swimming so gracefully and I forget all about it.
