Looks like our show coordinators are asking for some labor support after shows. Everyone loves shows, it is the work to set them up and tear down after people run from, and that is when the most help is needed. The show itself is fun and easy and everyone wants center stage then.

One thing I got into this hobby for was a peaceful break from relating to complicated and trying humans. We get some rest, feel all peaceful, then go to a show come or to chat to try the relating to humans thing again, thinking cuz they are other koi folks they will 'get it'. Then we get here and find out they are humans too, back to the pond.......sounds like your friend just needs some pond time nancy, rather than koi crowd time. Or a day at a crowded mall full of rude people and lots of crazy and rude traffic, that'll snap him out of it.......

I also tend to wonder if other areas of life are not going so well for him. He sounds like he may be heartbroken or really sad about something.

well, I have to go lay in my hammock and listen to the waterfall and watch the koi and talk to God about all this.........

As many have already stated. There are alot of us that are the diehards of the clubs, which all clubs need. On the other hand those who that do all the organizing and planning for club events, and the work involved in putting on these events, get tired. Every club has a handfull of us. Well the other 90% of the members in the club, sit back on the side lines. They all want these events but when the time comes for the event to take place, they are no were to be found. It is disheartening to see these members show up at the event, and not due anything to help. Todays club members are different from the old timers I think. I know that I have always asked all the local clubs if I can be of any assistance for there events. And helped whenever needed or asked. Well most of the new members only want the club to help them with pond problems or sick fish. Once they have these things under control, they no longer come to meetings or offer to help. But they keep there membership just in case any problems arrise, or so they can get the 10% club discount at the local dealer. I have seen several of the old timers come to other clubs events and bust there butt to help in any way possible. While the clubs own members didn't even bother to show up. So I guess most of you are right, it is koi people burn out for alot of us and not koi hobby burn out.

Can anyone be burned out? Sure you can...It's a mental thing and a game we play with ourselves to strive to be good at something. When we fail at something or get bored we switch to something else for awhile to refresh the mind. Burnout comes from within you and not outside factors. Me, I keep chuggin away at something that makes me feel good and has been for the last 10 years. Do I know everything? No...Am I doin the best with my hobby? Hell yeah. Do I see koi more important than my family and general life? No....

In the end you can do this hobby for one person and that is YOU.

Nancy you have hit the nail in the head, this last post is exactly what most (at least me) of us that love the Koi thing and stay involved with our clubs were thinking of.

EXCELLENT way to summarize it all

You know, SMG, I think a person can take showing with different mindsets. If done with a highly competitive spirit, all out to win GC, then I think burn-out can occur easily from the frustration. There will always be somebody bringing a fresh import, and then it is just a competition of wallets and whose dealer has the best access in a particular year.

But if a person participates with the mindset of displaying, or of "showing-off" what they have accomplished, or to learn by in-person comparison, or to educate others, or simply to share beauty, then I think the burn-out tendency would not be so high.

Aren't all of these part of showing? ...We stress ourselves by setting unrealistic expectations.

Well from what i read from most of you, you need to have that extra SPICE in the hobby.

Koi shows are infact not the Very essence of koi.

Its your hobby, I think everyone needs to just step back away from that.
The koi hobby is all about the Adventures and trials you go through.
The reason why i am so in love with this hobby is, you can think up anything as a design for your pond, you can make it super unique, or just like anyone elses.
For most people the koi hobby is about this. You all have forgotten what this is about, Imagination, you create your creation(s) from mere fantasy and you have the power to make it into REALITY.

If you are dying from the hobby maybe you should 1. rip down your koi pond, make it better and enjoy it even more.
or 2. Sell your house buy another house and make another koi pond better.
It can even be less difficult, go out to your koi pond Make new things for your pond, rearranging plants, getting rid of all the koi that you have and putting new ones in. Be creative, do something.

And Do not care what the Koi shows have to say about your koi, if you show your koi, The specific koi you brought to the koi show is number 1 in your book, and thats all you should go by, not some weird judges opinion.

you all have simply lost the essence that made you join the hobby, it was mysterious, difficult, and Magical.

And I have come to restore it all for you.
