In Rowly's case he plans to have bottom drains on all of the ponds so any detrius/mulm can be easily dealt with before a substantial accumulation has a chance to occur. Gravel is another matter. The mulm it might trap would create an environment for parasitic infestation that would not be so easily dealt with.
This particular situation is unique in that he has a multimillion gallon natural lake to act as a filter for him. Why create a scenario where the advantage of that is partially defeated by adding gravel that has nothing of value to contribute either biological or aesthetic?

Is it because it is harder to clean the mulm from the gravel?

Seems to me there is water flowing through a high mulm area in either case.

In fact, if you use a filter to clean the mulm from the water, then the water has to pass through the mulm, too.

As long as the mulm is trapped away from the fish in the pond, what harm does the mulm cause?

Is the idea to catch and remove the mulm from the cycle as soon and as often and as completely as possible, to reduce the food for bad bacteria, or is there more to it than that?

I would love to see some pics of snow.....I go outside and look up at the bright stars and pray "Please God, just one flake, right here in my mouth.." I haven't seen any weather under 55 in years...... I miss it.

Problem we have is whenever friends or family decide to get together, guess where they want to do it?

I threw in a few of our place at the end (the four w/ sunset and city view). Your place looks beautiful. My friend Clancy Baucom owns a similar lake, he's been putting off becoming a breeder for years.

It didn't post my pic of the cruise ship docks. I can watch their parties up close in my telescope. Some of them should really close their curtains.....

Thx for posting my lake/backyard pics JG...my little island looks like yours...ha!ha! Pic #3 is a view from the top trapazoid window looking towards the future top overflow pond, waterfall and lower large koi pond a little past the 2 small tree but far enough away so the roots will not interfer.

Pic #6 future view from top overflow pond
Pic #7 view straight out from new addition, the flag pole in the backyard and left will have major soil removal tapering the grade back to the lake in a "half C shape". On the other side of this area is a ramp area down to the lake with a fire pit close by. The 2 trees to the right of the flag pole will be removed and moved elsewhere. To the right of the flag pole the soil will be graded down some 2-3' for a better view of the north shoreline of the lake.
Pic #8..a top view west (right) from the top overflow pond starting the watercourse...I will build a gazebo up here to view the overflow pond, waterfall, and large koi pond below the waterfall, then streambed running up towards and past the addition, then swalling back to the lake for recycle. This is the highest point also to view the overall lake......
Pic # 9....future path of streambed up towards the new addition just completed.

I hope these pics help with the future watercourse and koi ponds design.....Pls comment on any suggestions. Much appreciated.

With that much water to coming in the ponds I dont think he would have a problem putting rocks in the bottom. In natural bodies of water that is flowing it will keep the water clean and fresh, if he keep plenty of fresh water moving through his ponds then whats the problem to rocks on the bottom, the moving water will clean it up for him.

Rocks and Stone below pond water line

Koifishgirl:

Decisions...decisions.....I'm thinking like you but I think I will reduce the amount of rock and stone below the water line to say 2' below water level....therefore the deeper areas will not have rocks but the shallower areas will.... especially when I use the BD to flush out sediment in each pond........any idea on the length of time a 4" BD and discharge pipe should be open to remove sediment from the pond??????
