That is a nice koi Mark. After reading nishikigoi comments, I guess I really have a hard time with some of those statements, but I have never seen the GC in person so want to be reserved in my comments.
If you look at the shiro on the pic Mark just posted and the shiro on the GC, I am sorry, but there is no comparison. I recognize the advance of the beni pattern and that it is high quality, but I think facts need to be faced that the shiro was not up to normal snuff for a GC. I understand it was an impressive koi, and deserved to win, but to say the shiro on this koi raised a bar is not the way I see it. It may have well raised the bar in terms of beni, pattern, body conformation, etc, but in terms of shiro if anything it opens a door to poorer shiro being regularly taken into the winner's circle.
I understand those who the koi there that day in person say they too noticed the shiro was not quite what some others have been, but that the beni and sheer volume made it by far the most impressive koi that day. Perhaps one of the reasons the beni looked so good is the shiro was sacrificed to some degree to accomplish that. Maybe next time cut the enhancers a little sooner eh??? Just kidding!
