KHV and the Big One?

First I am NOT knocking the '06 GC. better fish are rare.

Now maybe, just maybe it wasn't the best fish in Japan...not even the best fish that would have been at the show if not for the KHV outbreaks in Japan and last year's Earthquake.
The 'quake probably still has some koi ponds rattled, and the KHV outbreaks would make me think long and hard before I'd bring my treasures into a perceived risk....i mean couldn't some of the owners of the best koi be spooked because of the recent outbreak?

Luke, I'm sure what you say has some merit. But Sakai has been cleaning up at this show for several years now. The Asians beat a path to his door, and he is very good at making these red and white Jumbos. So I suspect it is a well deserved win. And The most hated line I hear at our local shows is " O, I have a better one JUST like that GC HOME IN MY POND". I wanta smack them. Instead I just say, "well, we'll never really know unless you bring it on out, will we?? Those who feel 'froggy', should jump!

Luke, if a koi is not in top shape because of the earthquake, it's obviously not the best on the day. Thats probably why it wasn't at the show.

About KHV, there's a real concern. But it has been that for years. The show was cancelled because of this two years ago. I guess if there were big doubts, the show would have been cancelled again!

yeah but "real doubts" by the show producers and percieved risk by some of those with the big girls are two very different things.

Which is more likely, having a fish die from the stress of being hauled around or having a fish contract KHV at a show? Seems like it has always been risky to take a fish to a show. If you want to play, you take your chances.

....and maybe somewhere in the world there was a better basketball player than Michael Jordan. Unfortunately, he was not on the court when Jordan was winning the championship. Get my point!!!

Luke has a valid point, but that is all part of the game isn't it? Like wind and rain during the NFL playoffs? The 'best' team does not nescessarily win the superbowl, but if they keep trying they will do it again eventually. Go 'skins!

Sakai has always been on the top echelon. So is Momotaro, Dainichi, and others. I would look for the top competitors to all be right there again over the next few years and a few like Marudo and Kansuke and others to be right there competing too. It will be fun to watch. I just hope the khv does not hit some of the others like it did Momotaro, I am sure Sakai would feel much better winning if that had not been a factor. Kind of like winning the superbowl when the other team's star qb is out injured. It is still a win and commendable, but it always feels better to win when your competition is in top form. Not that winning GC is ever easy, like winning the superbowl never is. Just getting in the finals is a battle.

Cultural differences

I think we often times forget how cultural differences affect our perceptions of how "things should be".

These mamoth jumbo gosankes of this quality are raised for one purpose and one purpose only, To win GC, the ultimate being the All Japan show. With this in mind, although "possible", it is unlikely that the breeder is going to sell a potential AJ show Gc to anyone that isn't going to show it. Afterall, a win at the AJ Show is advertising that you can buy. Also, keep in mind that there is a limited "window" of time that a specimen like this has. When the time is right, the time is right and associated risks will be accepted.

Are you implying a serious GC contender from Momotaro didn't compete because of their KHV episode?

If you are saying that, do you know it for a fact or are you merely speculating that maybe it just might possibly have happened?

'Cause me, I don't think that happened. And I sure don't think Sakai's feeling the least bit bad about bikini waxing Maeda-san's tush -- again! LOL
