Who do you feel is in the up and coming in the world of koi?

Just wondering who people think are the next big thing (breeder) in the koi world will be? There are a lot of good breeders that are very worthy of getting the job done. It doesn't have to only be gosanke.

There alot of smaller breeders that come to mind. Oyama for Showa, Ueno for Showa....there are alot of small breeders who really dont care about trophies, but care how the product is in the long run.

Hi Tony,
Would you mind elaborating on what exactly you mean by that. Recognition is almost impossible w/out some public competition. For instance, I suppose an artist could create exquisite works of art but if they are never shown, who would know?
How do you find such a breeder?
Thanks,
Jim

I am going to try and be diplomatic on this one. One of the issues about who is likely to move from lower to higher in the breeder rankings has to be generational. It takes a very long time for breeders to rise significantly in the ranks. One of the biggest issues is fewer and fewer of the current breeders sons and daughters want to take over their parent's koi business. Sun up to sundown lenght days in the heat and cold take a special dedication. Just like farms family all over the world the sons and duaghters of koi farmers are leaving the farms to work in more exciting and comfortable city jobs.

The next generation has to have more than just the knowledge and training. They need a burning desire to improve the quality of their koi to rise to a level of the best of the best. This does not happen if the goal is just to make money - It is much more about personal pride and need for individual/family acheivement.

I know many of these guys so I won't name anyone but if you think about it I bet many of us could all give examples of breeders where the next generation is a driving force keen on making their koi even better. Other farm where the next generation is content to live off their fathers reputation and milk the family name and the public for all they can get using their past family/farm reputation.

Currently there are a lot of Jumbo koi being produce. There are a lot of beautiful but not quite jumbo koi being produced. Most breeders goal is to be able to produce lots of koi with the best of both traits. That will be the breeder that makes it big time over the next few years.

I think Ueno will be someone to watch. Hopefully will be adding one of his showas to the pond this year. Marc

There are many great breeders, all having their own specialisations. So maybe it's not a question of who the next big breeder will be, but who will join the top echelons?!

One breeder I expect to join the fight for top honors at shows is Takayoshi Omosako, Omosako sans oldest son. He did his appreticeship at Dainichi and has set his mind to creating top class kohaku and showa.

Are you sure, because from what I know he was absolutely in love with them, and offspring was of good quality up to sansai. I know he has chosen to not spawn the set some seasons becuase he wanted to concentrate on showa and didn't have the space to grow out the kohaku.

Raymond, you may be right, but I got the impression they had been dropped.
There were no Kohaku in sight when I was there in November.

Perhaps Brian can confirm for us?
