Another strange false claim

Item description
Beautiful red lateral, pectoral and head beni pattern complemented by crisp and symmetrical reticulated blue netting. Asagi were the first variety of Nishikigoi from which all other varieties were derived.

This is the second falshood I have seen on this site. The first was that a butterfly sanke could be "show quality". Thoughts?

reading history next

Howdy-

>Asagi were the first variety of Nishikigoi from which all other varieties were derived.

I think Mr. Kohaku is questioning this fact. Reading posts by Ray Jordan, JR, Dick Benbow and if you can find them, Waddy, will fill you in on this stuff, Kohaku.

What books are you using?

Come to think of it, reading the writings of Joel Burkhart could help fill in some of the voids that are hard for us Americans to grasp. The site named koi.com may have some.

I know, I know, butterflies SUCK. (OOoo, they're so Floaty, Ahhh...)

I was under the impression that It went magoi, then a red-cheeked koi, then eventually the kohaku, then the subsequent varieties. Is Asagi really the first kind of Koi developed? Odd. If that is true, I retract my statement. The thing about Butterflies is that they usually are turned away from shows, considered not to be "real" koi. This would mean that they can't really be show ready.

Whether you like them, hate them or don't care either way many shows in the USA have a butterfly/longfin catagory which the sanke in question certainly would qualify for. Obviously they don't compete with standard koi because they are not standard koi but they can be shown in a show with a butterfly catagory.

As for the Asagi if you are referring to them being the first Nishikigoi.....I'm pretty sure most of the experts agree that they were.

Red face

Oh my. This is news to me . Rather embrassing. After reading the AKCA library article entitled "Kohaku" I was under the impression Asagis were later. Asagi are one of my favorites, where might I find more reading on the subject? Just for the record: I have no problem with butterfly's, it is one of 2 of my koi. I am also glad you told me that Butterflys show in the US, I was not familiar with that fact. Good to know. Thanks!
