Netting pond fish

Hi Guys and Gals

Something i struggle with is netting my koi when something is wrong and I need to check them over.

Do any of you have the same problems? It took me 3 hours last summer to catch my shusui in which time the stress this caused added to the problem of the argulus lice on him and he ended up with dropsy. Over the next few days he worsened and did not resopnd to any treatment until I reluctantly put him out of his misery

Has anyone got any tips or hints on how to catch our Koi?

I don't have big problems to net my koļ, they are now used to it, but the little one are more difficult to net . The only one difficult to net is also a shusui, but that does'n take more then one or two minutes.
The position of the net is important, you must go under the koļ and them slowly go up with a higher position in front of the head so they don't try to jump out of the net.
I don't have strait corner in my pond, but they are round, I think that must help.
The problem could come from the net that must be round and large (mine is 60 cm diametre).
What kind of net are you using ?

I have a huge net 42" but is triangular which might not help.

The size of my pond is akward 15ft wide and 5.5' deep and its rectangular shape means that edges are a problem.

My koi are all small too and so quick

Tip . . .

if you spend several hours at a "proper" koi dealer, you will see that with the right net and the right technique it's really much simpler than you think.

With the wrong net and the wrong technique it can be almost impossible.

So, go and watch the pros. Then invest in a high quality Japanese net. It's expensive, but you'll not believe the difference it will make.

If you pond is 15 ft wide it will be pretty tough catching smaller koi. You might need to buy a seine net to corral them into a smaller area to catch them quicker.

Good Info Ray & Don...

One other thing I can add when your current fish get some size on them and you invest again in tosia...if you need to net various sized koi (maybe for a show) always begin with the smaller ones first. They are the most difficult and if you save them till last they'll be so "wired' that even a pro will have a difficult time catching them.....

I tend to be very slow and deliberate and i like to get several smaller fish in a corner and slowly raise up as opposed to segregating just one koi as they seem to know by themselves that they're number is up.....

Sharpy

Just take your time, don't get frustrated... As Don said buy a good net. Your goal is not really to catch the fish but to guide them with the net to a koi tub. Small fish are always the most difficult to catch, but with patience and practice, you can be a pro in no time.

The best thing to do is watch an experience person do it. The "Net" should always be used to "Guide" a fish into the bowl or to be handled...Everyone is right thou watch a person do it first then try it...

Hi Sharpey,

First off is that a landing net you are using??

If so you can damage the fish with these and most probably why its taking so long to catch them.

You will need a large pan net and a large bowl to transfer the fish to from the net and some practice i was like yourself and could never catch the fish and would come away with a backache and be more stressed than the fish!!!!!!

Now i can net bowl and look over the fish in no time

As has been said above pop down to a local dealer and ask them to show you what dealer do you use???
