Salt.......

Got a new koi.... This is a little guy... under a year... About 5 inches long.....

Fellow I bought it from said it was a "dragon scale long fin".... Looks kujaku to me......

He doesn't look too good.... You know the symptoms: floating at the top of the water, isolating from other fish, swims good when necessary, eats at times.... But, this bothers me.....

Put it in a larger tank.... more water, more aeration etc.....

so, i was thinking about putting him in some salt water to reduce the stress.......

Problem is, I ran out of pond salt and was wondering if table salt would do...

I know some of you are absolutley aborrhent to salt so let me know....

Smile Salt City

Rock salt is a mined natural mineral about 98% Sodium Chloride (SC) (NaCl).

Solar salt as a natural product derived from evaporated seawater about 85% SC.

Evaporated salt is obtained by mining underground disolved salt and is 99.9% SC.

Table salt is SC mixed with potassium iodine, glucose and an anti-caking compound like calcium silicate.

Kosher salt is table salt with no additives most of the time.

Non-iodized salt is salt with no Iodine added to it.

Water Softener salt is sometimes yellow having anti-caking agents added.

Epsom salts is not SC but magnesium and can increase bowel activity.

Now, what is an abhorrent ? Is it a swamp, fish eating bird, is it bird eating fish?

Dreamer, make sure there is no iodine in the salt if you decide to use it!

The amount of iodine in table salt is non-toxic to koi and GF. Be careful of anit-caking agents. Salt to 0.1% can ease stress and will still allow the use of most meds. Roark's homepage has great info on water chemistry and some handy calculators. click2roark.com Register with a legit e-mail address for access to his homepage.

5" with or without fins? Either way it is a very young fish, and may not have been up to the stress of handling and transport. What is/was the water temperature?

Please tell me you quarantined the new purchase...... I consider failure to QT abhorrent.
