Wound Treatment and Medicine Chest

I just discovered that one of my koi had bumped itself against the wall of my indoor pond and damaged its caudal peduncle.....

It's a small wound, but its enough to desire dressing or treatment....

What would you suggest and how should I go about doing this...???

I have never had a koi with a wound before so, this is new to me....

It is an open wound about the size of a dime....

Also.....

What should one have in the koi "Medicine Chest"......

Was this koi ever in the same water with your other koi thats having problems? If yes, do you have a microscope that goes to at least 400x?

Benzoin tincture, an oral mucosal protectant forms a coating over a wound.

No... But, I ordered a microscope last week... I'm expecting it this week....


As for putting it in with the koi with problems.... Yes.... they were in with the black moor that was eaten by the turtle... However, the turtle is gone from that pond and I did a partial water change....

They were fine... But, I have a filter which is in the position of a bakki shower.... I think when it jumps when I am near, it bumped against it... So, I do not suspect bacterial infection at all.....

I am certain that this is what caused the damage....

right on KingKong! Stuff is available at most drug stores and is a main stay in controlling infection probblems on an open wound. If you watched the olympic coverage as of late and saw the story of the chinese skater that injured a tendon, it show a picture of the area after surgery and stitches and it was bathed in the stuff!

forgot to mention that when I was back to Quality Koi last Fall, Ross showed me
a bottle of bee propolis that they use to help hasten wound healing. Put some on a cut of mine and it was gone in two days!

Also, Can you provide more info about the bee propylus Quality koi was using? Sound like great stuff.

Sounds good.... I ordered Orabase with Benzocaine for the wound.... This stuff is supposed to relieve pain and seal the wound....


However, no one has mentioned procedure for wound treatment....

Should I anasthetize the koi for this?..... and how should I administer the clove oil........ What do you do to bring them out of the clove oil.....??????

You'r right Dick, propolis is quiete a good product and with no toxicity at all. Here in the region a lot of people make honney, so it's quiete easy to find it. A lot of people use it for them selves or for animals.

I got interested in "beeglue" awhile back for topical treatments and ingestion. This resinous stuff collected by bees works as an antibiotic to help block out active bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms from the bee hive. I buy it from bee farmers fresh but it is hard to put into a tincture or solution. If I remember, heat helped and alcohol. It will make a great wound seal, thats for sure.
