Steve,
I am so sorry. You take such good care of your fish.
We haven't had the cold hit here.... yet.

Sorry about your loss.... How old was the little fellow?.....

Looks like we're both getting "dead fish" news today....

But, mine was alive when I got it....

You said, this wont happen next year... What do you plan to do diffently, if you don't mind me asking?....

I am planing on having my indoor pond going by next winter. So I won't have to winter my koi outside in freezing water.

I'm with you Steve. My next pond will be in a large greenhouse. I had fun with a foot of snow this weekend.

The issue I worry about is the water warming up and then dropping very quickly. The backyard pond dropped 6 degrees last night.
It is not even as cold as it is supposed to be.
Are changing temps a lot worse on the fish?
The front pond is essentially a wood box lined with rubber. It is half burried in the ground. That one is not as scary, just have to empty it down about a third and turn the two 300 watt heaters up. It doesn't keep it warm but it is at least 50 degrees.
SPRINGTIME??? WHERE ARE YOU??

Sorry to hear about your kohaku.

In Sweden most of the koikeepers always take their koi inside for the winter.
I´m one of them. The winters is often very cold and long here in Sweden.
This is my kois home during the wintermonths.
With a watertemp at 18 degrees celcius.

Regards
Stefan

Hi,

it´s always sad 2 loose koi.. most of us know!

Over here in Germany we have a lot of ice this winter.
Think we had around 20cm on the pond. I´m fine with that
cause koi survive well under thick ice.

problems usually start in spring- when it´s gettin warmer again.
These days really bother me!

Back to your kokaku:
If he´s still alive, You have to avoid warm water on him!! He´ll
be dead before u know what´s goin on.. So bring him out in a
bowl of pond water. Don´t forget 2 fill the tank with pond water
too. Let him swim under good air circulation.... and hope, hope ,
hope,,,

Give him some salt and bring the water slowly over 10°C

Build an indoor pond is fantastic & gives u the chance to make them handsam

best wishes
