This is why I want an Indoor Pond

Current temp 3 degrees, Ice about 2 inches thick, froze in the ice. Shit!

Are you sure it's dead? When water temperature goes very close to freezing, the life functions get slowed down to a level that the koi appears dead. It happened to me once way back and took the koi out into a bowl into the garage, where i warmed the water slowly. The koi started breathing again and survived!

Maybe it's still alive. I could deteck no movement. The ice is to thick to break with out shocking the other fish. I think I'll just leave it until it thaws in a few days.

You could open up a gap in the ice by pooring tap water on the ice right where the kohaku is. This will melt the ice slowly.

If I could get to it I would use my weed burner to melt the ice, but it's about 10 feet from the edge and the ice is not thick enough to support me.

How about the other koi in the pond?

Can you gradually pour water over the surface until it melts?.... Take a hose or a pot of water and let it run over the surface..... ((I know this idea will be shot down )).... Maybe try some salt... throw some salt out there.....

The other koi are doing just fine. I think this one must have been weak to begine with, I found a piece of 3" PVC and ran it out to the fish. I poured hot water through the pipe enough to melt him free from the ice. But he floated away farther under the ice. So I guess I will just have to wait and see. It's cold but bright and sunny so maybe later this afternoon I will try again.

Between the sun and me pouring hot water on the ice I was able to melt a slot wide enough to reach him with a long net and get him out. I think he had been dead for a while as he had started to decompose at the base of his tail. This won't happen next winter!
