Luke,

what size are they, and how big a tosai can they handle?

a normal sized one is 2.5 inches...big ones are three inches...and the worst thing...they fly. So when it starts drying up you have to look around the lake before skinny dipping.
tosai size... i wouldn't think they would go for something as big as them unless it was hurt. When they bite me, it is a bit of a shock. I wouldn't doubt there is something in the bite besides teeth (actually I think they have a peircing/sucking mouthpart?)....maybe some venom...but I do not know. I just smash them

Sakai clear water system

152.163.100.12 Since I can no longer seem to be able to log into Koi-Bito ( I've given up trying) I thought I'd respond to the guys discussing the clear water system over here. Yes, it is just a modified version of an UG system with several key modifications. The water flows horizontally as opposed the traditional down flow or the slightly more efficient upflow.
Perhaps more import is the depth and sand type. It is shallow and very light weight- almost buoyant. As the fish pass over it or root around in it, it becomes water borne for a moment or two- making it almost a dynamic media of sorts? The water is to flow like a river and the media is meant to neither pack, trap or become dense in any way.
Sakai ALWAYS preferences his remarks about this system with the statement that it is NOT meant for high class fish or tategoi but only a system for a ‘theme pond’ in a hotel or park setting.

I signed up at NI a few hours ago but while I'm waiting for a response from the admin there I thought I would post here so maybe one of you with an account over there can forward this on to JR.

Hi JR. Your account at KB appears to be fine. Have you tried clearing your cookies and temporary internet files? With IE you go to tools-internet options and then click delete files and delete cookies. Of course deleting the cookies will mean you will need to log in to all the sites you go to again. Hope this helps.

After reading on NI of the unusual media being used, I must retract the disparaging comments made about the patent. However, if the media is the innovative part of the system, then why wasn't the media described in the patent? What is described sounds almost like a fluidized bed rather than an UG.

having read the NI board...

everyone must be kidding... how much flow thru would a fish cause, even if such "gravel" were to float a few seconds due to a tail flick? anyhow, the material has to be heavy enough so the pump/current doesn't displace it, so how light could it be? ridiculous! it is what it is, someone even said it could be aluminum based media. now that's grasping at straws.

this discussion has now entered the realm of a "secret" type of fluidized media bed, are we back to debating a Sakai "bacteria house" that no one has seen? the patent does not specify (thereby does not cover) media, except in general size (~5mm). by all means, please restrain your imaginations!

Smile Another angle

Said gravel or sand spec says not to exceed (5) mm in size so a "BB" ammo is (4.5) mm or 3/16 of an inch, for size ref.
very fine sand .05 mm
med sand 0.25-0.5
coarse sand 1.0- 2.0
fine gravel 2.0-5.0 clean water spec

A natural symbiotic water purification, anti-fouling system with colonies of anaerobic and aerobic bacteria doing the clean-up, catches it on the ear again.
We rather depend on custom skid filtration systems, bristling with over-sized pumps, bioreactors, UV sterilizers, ozone generators, protein fractionators and the like. Now you are telling me I can have clean water and have a healthy environment by using just sand or grit on the bottom the size of a "BB"?
So what am I suppose to do with the 8 foot turbo foam fractionator I just bought, and the counter-flow degassing column?
Something is not right here.
