Here's a Tosai Shiro with alot of Sumi on it..."Young Sumi"...This type of sumi tends to receed at this age. But no doubt the white is white, even the head. Be interesting to see how this Shiro looks by the end of summer.

MJ: I think the main problem with your Shiro is that it is too cold in Kentucky. I think a 9 month growing season in 72+F water would do it well. ....Now, where could that be, hmmmmm.

Orlando water temp at 7pm today: 71F

Actually, that's just partially a joke. Part is serious. It just needs to grow more.

Oh, great! You can pick us up at the airport on Monday. He has abandonment issues, so you see, I'll have to stay with him... as will all the rest of his finned friends. Oh, and the beagle too. He's very attached to his dog as well.

I suppose it may haved worked out for shiro to have him in the QT tank then. He is basking at a comfy 75 degrees right now and seems content. Wish I had brought in my little Isa showa as well. Hindsight is 20-20.

Hmmmm, yes, much whiter whites on that little one. Like the shape of the head. Man, "toilet bowl white," that is harsh. Course, mine was more "smoker's teeth white" for awhile there...but it has gotten a bit better.

Angry Contradicting Development Info re Shiros

I saw those shiros in person the other day. 4 to 5 inches, 600 clams each and all are sold.

[Info 1]
I read in the KB Omosako article, as well as Kodama's Kuguoyo 2, that shiros that are heavily patterned as tosai tend to remain that way.

[Info 2]
Speaking live to 2 other people (one old timer and one totally kichii) that Omosako shiros (tosai) have a first pattern, then it fades, and a new pattern emerges later. Like baby teeth but probably in different places.

That's a great way to confuse someone, isn't it? And are non-Omosako different? Ugg!

Some other bloodlines of shiro do the same thing. It's in the sumi. I have had Omosako shiro on two separate occasions (total of 3 fish). The sumi keeps coming (thickens up) and in a lot of cases, increases in volume, while others tend to tighten up. I think it's as Dick B said, different parents, different attributes. Ogata started using an Omosako oyagoi a few years ago. Man, that sure improved the quality of his shiro line. Totally different look. Very white with deep sumi. His old line had very weak sumi and a ccreamy to yellowish shiroji.

Personally, I like the shiros from Mano and Kaneko. To me, right now they are the best lines in Japan. Having said that, I can't wait to see the nisai this next fall harvest from Torazo. He told us he will have MANY high quality shiros then.
