I bought his book last year and really enjoy it.
I don't think I would isolate a fish with hikui, some also speak about lever problem.Even if it's a viral origin that give some "tumor", immunity has to do a lot. That would explain the relation with genetic, and would explain that some fish never have hikui even if they are among other affected.
But these are only suppositions...

IMHO, the best website for more information is Duncan Griffiths Koiquest & Koi-Unleashed:

http://www.koi-unleashed.co.uk/

On left-hand column, click on "Hikui"
Griffiths article talks about treatment.....does not address whether or not to isolate the fish from the general population.

What is the concensus here, on this Board???

Bob (concerned cuz I have one Koi w/Hikui)

First, I'd like to address the statement about carp pox - No, it doesn't just show up on the leading edges of anything. It can show up anywhere on the fish. I've seen fish covered in it and most with just one or so spots. Body, fins, head, lips, it doesn't have a preference for location.

One the shoulder of this fish, it is clear that it has had hikui for a while, because the lesions on the skin are already gone and the hi in those areas has already started to diminish, As far as the head area is concerned, I think there are other issues at hand and should be scoped just to be sure of what it is before ANY treatment advice is given.

Get a microscope and do some scrapings. See if you can identify the culprit and then let us know what you think it might be. Maybe your dealer or another hobbyist in your area can assist you with this. It's always helpful to have two people, that way you don't have to anesthetize the fish to do it.

the next to last section in Duncan's treatise on hikui says: Once dry release the koi back to the pond.

From this I infer that he does not feel it necessary to isolate the koi from the general population. Now if one's inclined to quibble, they can rightly point out that this release is post-treatment -- further, that said release might or might not be contraindicated a priori.

Some do; some don't. Take your choice.

Thanks for the link to that website. I read just about everything on it yesterday. Lot of good info that covers a wide variety of topics for koi health.
