DIHN,

maybe I should have been more clear, koi doctor is a term used by koi kichi around here when referring to veterenarians specialized in koi. They have a otherwise normal study at a University, but with as much specialisation as possible on koi. They usually do their internship at importers of koi, research facilities for fish farming, at a agricultural University with a Fish science department, and when they are lucky at some 1st generation "koi doctor".

But to my knowledge, "koi doctor" is not a protected title.

Yes, it would always be better to know exactly what type of bacteria, your fish has and treat with the specific a/b. I personally use the silver bullet method. Azactum and Amikacin together. I find that the mixture of the 2 will usually do the trick. I do not recomend this practice to anyone. It is always wise to know exactly what you are treating for, if it is at all possible.

Most cat-and-dog vets can have a culture and sensitivity test done. Just ask for a culturette kit, and take a sample yourself. Results take about a week, and some anitbiotics such as Azactam are not included. Still better than guessing IMHO.

I've had 3 or 4 koi that were ulcerated to the extent that they needed to be stuck, so I took them to our fish doc. No worse than taking them to a show, really.

But if, once there, he told me he was going to run a culture -- "come back in a week" -- I would not be a happy camper. Don't know if the koi would, either.
