Bacteria House better with watersofter....

Bacteria House better with watersofter....? Seems people are having a hell of a time using Bacteria with hard water(tap water)....I havent seen the media soften water, after adding the media it has only produced shimis....this spring I am removing the media from my main pond and adding it to my mud pond that has natural softwater.

Interesting feedback about BH media for our area. After you read all the hype about it softening your GH, you're not having the same results. What was/is your current GH readings?

I fail to see what the two have to do with one another…

I have several Baki showers with Bacteria House media running in them. I have systems on both hard and soft water. Other than one Kohaku out of about 60 fish I have not had problems with Shimis. The koi that has gotten shimis is a koi that had a small sumi stripe about 1/2 inch long in the tail fin when I bought him and I think is genetically inclined to get sumi spots.

I know hard water can play a part in shimis but I do not see were the Bacteria House media plays a part. The media is not supposed to chemically react with the hardness of your water. The process that I can see influencing the water hardness is the normal use of carbonate hardness in the filtration process. But that should not effect your over all hardness if you are doing the water changes that are required with a Baki Shower.

There was a thread quite a while back which discussed all the attributes of bakki showers and the bacteria house media - it was debated to death!! One of the points made had to do with bacteria house media and the showers having the adept ability to reduce the GH level in your pond. Thus Antonio merely is asking why it's not working as claimed and that all of a sudden his fish got shimis.

I am Sorry,

I came late to the discussion. I think the problem with any new product is that it is always made out to be the answer to all problems. There is always a tendency to make things more than what they are. They may be a perception of the GH going down through the normal biological process but the media does require regular water changes of about 10% per day to work affectively and at the rate it cannot change your GH.

I hate when people are taken advantage of by misinformation.

John

PS There is nothing more frustrating than a big ole shimi showing up on what is other wise a prize winning Kohaku.

I don't see any chemical possiblity for BH media to soften water unless there is massive scale forming on the media itself. Pie in the sky if you expect such a thing. If you want soft water install an RO system or find a new source of water!

Are you sure momotaro claimed in the literature that his media would make pond water softer?????? If that were the case then he may have a point but if that was meerly suggested on a message forum by a hobbiest then there is no case.

i can see storm clouds forming...

I read in an interview with Maeda, I think it was that koi food series paired with that Vet friend of his, that hitting water would make it softer. I kid you not!!!

I dealt directly with Momotaro when I first started looking into the Bacteria house media. I brought in 1500 Kilos. In all my conversations with them there was never any mention of BH softening the water.

So, if you've been using it for a while, what is your opinion of the BH media? You said that it requires changing 10% water every day. Why not just have an open system. There's no way I'm changing 10% EVERY DAY!! Currently, I change about 15% A WEEK!! That's enough for me.
